For something with the power to weight ratio this has, the performance metrics are very disappointing.

And then when you consider the price?

No surprise about the 0-60, the more power a FWD car had the more the weight shifts rearwards on launch, the less traction you get. Could probably do an epic launch in reverse!!

That engine in the Abarth Spider will be interesting

These engines are great for power.

I've just got back from an Abarth specialist as I have a 180 Competizione a quick map and cone filter will obtain 220bhp not bad for minimum outlay.

People wondering why 4WD and RWD cars accelerate quicker off the line than this. Really?

I know this isn't very "PH" but I really don't see the point in 400+bhp/tonne through the front wheels. Why not just start with a car which is setup up to actually generate some traction or at least an agreeable form of lack of traction?

To a point. Stronger block, forged crank and pistons, cams, head work, bigger turbo etc etc. This engine is essentially no longer a FIAT unit :-)

A lot of boost and lag I expect, but who cares, it's bonkers! A lot of tuned TFSI boys would get their bottoms handed to them in one of these, and won't admit to being beaten by a FIAT 500 on any of the forums, lol!

I don't think anyone is surprised that a FWD car is slower off the line all other things being equal- it is just surprising how even the advantage of so little weight fails to overcome the FWD disadvantage. Every day a school day.smile

Less mass to accelerate, but less load on the driven wheels, so less force to make them slip.

280hp/litre... Can't see that lasting long!
Why not? it's easy. I've been running way over 200bhp per litre for years - lump has done 300,000 miles and I didn't have the resources of a full-blown tuning house to develop the engine

As for 400bhp through the front wheels - yes, it's a bit of a 'mare getting it off the line quickly, but once rolling, it's not really that much different and it's far more forgiving than the same power through the rear wheels - we're not all drift-gods....

0-60 time is the only significant performance metric quoted (top speed being pretty irrelevant). Do you have access to any other metrics for this car?

I am surprised that on a forum of supposed car enthusiasts there are so many people that don't realise that putting 400bhp through the front wheels on road tyres is not going to lead to the sort of standing start performance you could extract from an equivalent RWD or 4WD car.

In real world conditions these hot 500's are very quick for such a little car, must be great on a B road with so little width, and slightly scary with the short wheelbase. This must be manic.

Funny how the ladies car 500 actually can be made macho mental, something VW failed with the Beetle even in R guise.

400 from 1.4 though. That's pushing it even for a modern engine. In the old days it would be a highly tuned Sierra Cosworth with so much fuel being pumped through the large exhaust you could smell the petrol as it overtook you and had to put out your ciggy pronto....
