It can depend on the car.

Ferraris look fine in red, but Mercs look terrible.

Saw an Audi RS7 this morning in "doom blue." (Similar to the standard colour on SEATs and Skodas). Worryingly I thought it looked stunning.

Worst colour on a car? One chosen for its resale value later on.

Agreed 100%. And to be honest I am quite surprised at the animosity shown to colours including Brown metallic, certain reds and purple. Seriously, purple!? Perhaps one of the rarest colours found on a car - certainly if I was ever in a position to spec a car brand new I'd go for something outrageously purple.

Someone even said Laguna Seca - I suppose all M3s should be resale silver/black?

Exactly, why spend all that money on something for someone else to enjoy later?

BMW did the Z4 in 'urbangreen':

They have whole series of cars which you can only get in black and grey, yet this made it to production

Why would you?
So that it looks awesome next to the unfathomable sea of drabness on the roads.

Just bought a new car in grey - best colour for it as it'll rarely get washed.

This argument is too binary. There are some great reds and some terrible reds - same with all colours.
It just depends if it suits the car, the shape, height, width, bodywork details all make or break the colour and as whether or not it suits the car.

Or the people who like Laguna Seca buy Laguna Seca, the people who like silver or black buy silver or black.

Regardless of your opinion, Laguna Seca is a marmite colour, as is Phoenix Yellow and to an extent Imola Red. I was in the market for a convertible E46 years ago and the only colours I was interested in was silver, black or grey (with red interior (or Kiwi on black)). My decision making had nothing to do with resale value, I simply thought it looked best in subtle colours with a lairy interior....

I hear you, but it does seem to me that people on this thread are outright discounting some of absolutely seminal factory colours, Laguna and Merlin purple being some examples mentioned. I too love the red interiors specced on some BMWs, but I suppose for everyone who likes a lairy interior there are equal numbers who want bright (or lairy depending on the individual perspective) paintwork. Each to their own of course, but I'm all for more colourful cars than the current churn of white goods and silver surfers.

My two cars are brown - Disco Sport - and gold - MGF,

I like unusual colours on cars. It adds a bit of variety to streets and car parks.
