I own as many as I like, let me repeat that I OWN AS MANY AS I LIKE. The views of the bearded sandaled holier than thou embittered losers is of no interest to me nor is global warming or air pollution.
BTW why not ask Jay Leno the same question?

Myself and the wife own 4 cars between us. Nothing like the OP's Dad though. I have often owned 5 cars sometimes 6. I can only use one at a time, some some don't see a lot of use. I don't feel the need to justify their existance by giving them a role eg shopping. I just use whichever one I want to use. I have more than enough space to keep them. Have as many cars as you want.

Between me and my dad we have 6. It's fine to have many.

I have 2 (daily and then an Elise for fun), plus storing another Elise for a friend. Once he moves that into his place I fully intend to fill the space with a 90's hot hatch (maybe a Clio Williams or a Ford Puma) and when I can afford to rebuild the garage my intention is to have at least 1 lift in there for working on cars and increase storage capacity to 3 or 4 cars.

If he wants to keep them then what's the problem? My Dad has a V12 Vantage, an M135i and I was trying to convince him to buy a classic Mini Cooper S when we were at an auction a while back.

I owned 2 BMW 750's and a BMW 525 at the same time with only one garage space. As said before, 3 is far from too many biggrin

Number of cars you should have can be expressed as n=1, where n is the current number you own.
So... 1 then?

I think you mean n+1, but I is fick at maffs.

Agreed. If you're not looking to establish a collection, where some cars inevitably won't be driven (or at least, not driven much at all) then 3 is a good number. Having been in the 3 to 5 range for some time, I've recently been in a selling mood and have found 3 is better than I thought it would be and will stick at that number.

At least for a while driving

I'm also thick, as I have 3 cars (maybe more) 3=1, which is either so mathematically complex I'm a genius, or just plain wrong. I suspect the latter

I have 5 and take the tube to work. To be honest it is too many as I don't seem to get enough use out of them. I often think about selling but then go for a drive and forget that idea!

I think 3 cars is the ideal number for a 2 driver household. You always have a spare. Flat tyre? Jump in the other car. Blocked in? Jump in the other car.

I think Harry Metcalfe hit the nail on the head when he said when buying another car he goes for a different configuration; mid engine, front engine, V12 etc etc. Though this was in the same sentence where he admitted to owning 14 cars!

He's a sensible man.

Hence I have a FWD 6 cylinder, FWD 4cylinder supercharged, RWD I6 NA, RWD I6 soon to be charged or V8 swapped and still fancy something like a MR2/Z4 2 seat convertible.

The other day when there was the discussion about "having a barn to fill with £1k cars" , i'd be dangerous if I had such storage!!!!!

Well if you have a use for them, then why would you get rid?

I'd only get rid of one if there wasn't any point to it and it wasn't being used at all - or of course if needed to free up some cash / reduce costs. In which case I'd get rid of the fastest depreciating or least used.

BMW 430D for daily.
Porsche Boxster S for Sunday
Mercedes ML for bikes.
Yamaha R1 for tracks.

Not including any cars owned by wife.

More chance of me buying more cars than selling any current ones. Why is there a limit on how many you should have on a drive?

I often have 3 now and again as I sometimes see something and buy it to sell on. I could really do with 3 on a permanent basis. Have a van for daily duties, Stripped out track car for erm Track and weekend fun but then it would be nice to have a 'normal' car for driving to restraunt/shopping e.t.c.

Trouble is having 3 becomes a chore/expense sorting out tax/insurance/maintenance e.t.c.

The OH has a car as well but it's (usually) stinking shed she uses for work and stable duties and isn't suitable for the above. It is good for dumping at the pub though.
