Are 3 cars for one person too many?
Discussion
I have 3. I like to have a decent mix of cars that suit their purposes - my daily driver is an old C-class, it's in relatively good condition but I won't be particularly upset if I find a door ding after parking in Tesco. I have a Mk1 MX-5 for cheap thrills, I drive it quite hard and it's starting to get a little rough around the edges, but on a nice sunny day it's quite fun to take a convertible to work and not be too fussed about leaving the top down or if someone reverses into it. I also have a halo car - a C63 - that I use whenever the mood takes me (normally weekends).

A petrolhead can never have too many cars
This this this! haha I've ended up with four cars, they're not all flash or expensive but actually I didn't see the point in selling two I'd bought new, another is a daily driver and one I bought as a bit of a realistic dream car. They're all kept off road so don't get in anyone's way and don't cost me too much to insure so why not!
I get comments from people as I don't use them as much as I could if I just had one car but hey, I'm happy with them so sod it. I'd have more cars if I had the funds and space.
C Class for dull daily stuff.
Spitfire for Sundays and nothing to far from home.
V8 Vantage for anything else.
I would like to add three or four more, I think 7 cars is the right number ... Including those driven by my girlfriend.
I want to add;
Classic Range Rover.
CLS 55.
A Jeep Wrangler.
Super Charged MX-5
Something for everyday of the week.

If he doesn't go off road then get shot of the Defender. RRS is way better on the road.
That's the thing, he doesn't really, just uses it to go shopping and I feel it's a waste. The RRS (or any other car) could do all the Defender does in more comfort and use less fuel! He's just scared about it being dinged but it has been already and it's not even used much.Plus with the £30k from the Defender that will pay for a lot of ding repairs!
I have no problem with 3 cars, more the better but it's just that the RRS and Defender fill the same brief, so I don't really see the point in having both.
Thanks for all the replies.

I own as many as I like, let me repeat that I OWN AS MANY AS I LIKE. The views of the bearded sandaled holier than thou embittered losers is of no interest to me nor is global warming or air pollution.
BTW why not ask Jay Leno the same question?
Just got in from the pub? BTW why not ask Jay Leno the same question?
I have my owned from new 1998 BMW 3 series, a 2016 Mustang v8 5.0 and a 300cc Vespa.
I think I need a useful low mpg car like a Dacia Duster.
Should I sell the Mustang, which after all is just a toy that makes me smile every time I drive it?
I can't bear to sell the BMW, which is basically worth less than the 4 decent tyres I buy for it every 2 years or so.
Or sell the Vespa, which I keep wussing out of using every time there is a rain cloud on the horizon?
If your dad has the space to keep 3 cars like I currently have, why not keep the lot?

I have an E350, the 3.6 v6 not the diesel, estate for doing long journeys on and it is 7 seats so great for the kids etc.
And it averages 30mpg and does 35+ on a run.
A BMW 130i manual as a fun car that can still fit us all in, including the dog, so is pretty sensible.
I have sold my ML as I thought the new E350 would do the job as well, but although the E Class is relaxed I still felt the ML was far comfier, lazier to drive and offered s much more load space which I have missed far more than I thought I would over the last few months, so fancy another one or something similar like a Range Rover.
But they are thirsty so wouldn't replace the E350 with one.
Then I would also like something proper sporty, or a sporty GT of some sort even, so either a 911 or maybe a Masser Granturismo.
Now, it isn't going to happen, but that is what I would like.
if you have the funds and the space go for it.
All I would say is the 110 Defender could maybe be swapped for something smaller, unless I was going offroad I would never take the Defender over the Range Rover, to me that would be a pointless car.

I couldn't own two cars that do a similar role, mine all cover different roles. I'd have to swap either the RR or the Defender for something else unless I started using the Defender for proper off roading and didn't want to risk the RR off road. If he isn't going off road what about swapping the Defender or RR for a R107?
Personally I like a track car, off roader, relaxed convertible, daily, family wagon. I haven't managed to get the off roader yet, need to get that sorted.

There's no such thing as a car that does everything, and in fact cars that try tend to be hugely expensive to run, rather dull to drive and not particularly good at any one thing. I've always been far happier with multiple cars for this reason. Furthermore, it's not three times more expensive to own three cars as most car costs are per mile (tyres & fuel are directly per mile, and depreciation, servicing and insurance are both proportional to mileage), so you save money that way. For example, it's far cheaper to run a BMW 320/330 and a Caterham than it is to run an M3 or a 911, and in my experience far more enjoyable overall. So no, 3 isn't too many, and for the cars you've listed, depreciation is going to massively outweigh any extra costs on VED or insurance etc.

I can see the point of having multiple cars, or anything else, if they serve clearly different purposes.
For me 2 cars is perfect. A daily that offers all of the practicality and comfort required all year round and toy for weekend fun and the odd track day.
There are a few posters who seem to just have an impulse to collect older cars, and good for them, but that's a lot of space, insurance, road tax and maintenance to deal with on a yearly basis for no obvious benefit s far as I can tell.
For the OP's question, as above, if no off road driving then dump the 110 as they are bloody awful as a road car anyway.

Surely the very act of owning the cars is the benefit i.e. it brings the owner enjoyment ?For me 2 cars is perfect. A daily that offers all of the practicality and comfort required all year round and toy for weekend fun and the odd track day.

If everybody took the form follows function route then we'd all be in a Golf Monday to Friday with an MX5 for prescribed weekend fun.
