one of the xenon bulbs in my Octavia mk1 has given up the ghost. Having never had to replace one before I'm wondering what the correct part number is for the original. I've had a look at euro car parts and they offer a Phillips 'D2s' but they also offer a few different outputs like 4200k, 5300k, 5500k, etc.

I just want to replace the bulbs with factory spec ones, anybody got any ideas what bulbs I need to get?

The 4200k will most likely be closest to oem and would probably give the best light output. I assume your swapping them both so the colour temps don't have to match oem exactly.

I am going to swap them both. Would 4800k give better light output. Philips seem to think so with their super upgrade bulbs. Or is that something that's got nothing to do with them being 4800k?

The k value is the colour temperature. The higher the value the more "blue" the light appears but also the lower the light output.

As said OEM is around 4200k.

By that logic the Philips ones at 4800k shouldn't be offering 150% extra vision so is there another factor at work?

150% compared to what? It could be 150% compared to standard 4800k bulb. It's all just marketing which has to be taken with a pinch of salt. The light output reduction is more noticeable if you go full chav with something like 8000k

Have a look at Osram Nightbreaker Xenarc Unlimited as they get good reviews and are well priced on Amazon

I put a pair of Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited D2S in my MK5 Golf and the colour temp is the same as OE, just a bit brighter.

I think the claims of improved range and brightness are exaggerated, and probably assume a 100% transparent projector lense, which the MK5 platform does not have.

I would think vs. OEM but I really don't know. I think I will be going with the Osram night breakers anyway. I was concerned about putting in bulbs which would be so bright that they'd blind people but it seems like the self-leveling system is reliable enough.
