Girl at work was driving around with her lights off at night without realising because she learnt in a car with auto lights.
Partly the design doesn't help. Dials are illuminated, lights on or not, my car has no 'lights on' warning light and the switch is out of sight my my knee. Of course there is a big thing you can look out of called a windscreen.-Lummox- said:

Although this is excessive, if they need access to the boot, getting a dog in and out for example, the hedge would get in the way. We usually park forward in situations like this as our dog is getting elderly and needs a run upSome cars make it easier by having a tailgate line on the reversing camera display so you know how far you can go back and still open the tailgate.
I’ve had this on both VW and Toyotas, but without a camera the problem with sensors is they’re not completely accurate with hedges rather than solid walls.
It’s moronic to walk away from a car sticking out into the roadway like that.
You either park nose in or empty the boot before finishing the parking.

The dog and I really appreciated having to walk in traffic on this main road because this throbber was too lazy to turn into the driveway that they were blocking anyway
As a young'un I was sat in my car, engine off, with a girl I'd just taken out. I was about to make my move when I heard a squeaky sound. Looking round, her cat was very, very slowly sliding down my windscreen with his bumhole pressed against the glass, leaving a greasy streak right down the centre. Well it was Essex, even the cats are uncouth. Hilarious though it was in retrospect, the mood changed, I didn't get my oats that night and cursed that cat.Anyway, what I suggest is that you allow your dog to leave a snail trail down the windscreen.

Came back to my car after a day at Banham Zoo and was confronted with this lovely blue Focus ‘parked’. Car park was half full, loads of spaces but still chose to park it next to me. They couldn’t have got out the drivers door as there were no marks on my car from door or clothing!
Can you post a pic of the sole of your boot in their paintwork Vipers said:

Good story and that sounds reasonable. If he'd done a poo by that point I'd have left the bag on the windscreen wipers.Anyway, what I suggest is that you allow your dog to leave a snail trail down the windscreen.

This. I've never understood how anyone can drive a car and not tell the difference between when their lights are on, and when they're not. Even if you're driving in an area that has street lighting. The difference (unless you're driving a car with really naff headlights) is pretty much night and day - for obvious reasons.
I can. I had a hire car for work few years ago, smallish Renault. It was just starting to get get dark as I pulled over to get something to eat.
Came out half an hour later and it was quite dark. Switched on the car and the cark park in front lit up. Auto lights I thought.
Driving along the road and people behind start flashing me, after a wee while I worked out it was the DRLs lighting up the road ahead but I had no rear lights on.
The hotel car park gets full, the barrier won't admit vehicles when it's full. But folks park like this, so vehicles are admitted when there are no free spaces, and so one drives around to find the free space, and it's occupied by s like this. The double parkers are tracked down by reception to be shifted into a single space, but this can take time and sometimes they are off site anyway. This was an absolute st show last night, and is looking to be so again this afternoon. Some decent in your face mitigation signage would be useful.
