It's the Italian province code for Bolzano, where it's registered. On the old Italian number plate format, before it went all EU, they put the province code at the start on the front plate and at the end on the rear plate. So it would appear as BZ-123456 on the front and 123456-BZ on the rear.

On the assumption that the customization was relatively expensive, it really is terrible. For those who have no interest in modern cars it is entirely invisible - it just looks like a normal BMW to me - and it seems to get up the noses of those in the know about such vehicles.
