Does anyone know of any issues at present with dealers being able to tax brand new cars?
My MiL is waiting on a new motability car which is at the dealership. However, the dealer is saying there's an issue that a few dealers are facing doing first time tax - they've been trying the last week to do so.
My MiL is very light on detail so apologies the above is sparse but want to check if it rings any bells with people on here.
Is it possible she's exempt from paying vehicle tax? I'm guessing they need to process the exemption for the vehicle.

Out of curiosity, what manufacturer is it?
I’m at Toyota, and we have to get registration approval from Toyota GB fleet for Motability, this normally takes 24hrs, but is currently at 96hrs.

She will be exempt but I guess something needs to be processed against the vehicle for that to happen. You have "tax" even a car with zero VED, and you get fined if you don't renew it!

Short answer: no.

Long answer: it’s marque specific.

All our Motability cars are marked as exempt from VED from day 1 so there are no extra steps involved than taxing a normal car. It’s actually incredibly easy to register a brand new car. Even I do them hehe

Thanks all, its vauxhall. Sounds like it could be the fleet issue as per Toyota.

Given it's new number plate time, what's the shortest time between a "happy" customer taking our their brand new car to becoming a disgruntled customer bringing it back for major repairs because it's borked?

We had a customer get sideswiped on the roundabout outside our dealership a few years back, wrote the car off. Was about 4 minutes after handover!

I had a Megane written off on it's way to being delivered to a customer, it was collected from port, loaded on to a car transporter and both car and transporter write offs in an accident!

A girl I used to work with was buying a Vauxhall Nove brand new (which dates this anecdote). The sales guy said it was just being driven up from the PDI area, ‘let’s go outside and see’. Towards them it came, looking lovely right up to the point someone drove out from between a row of parked cars, straight into the side of it.

She finally got it a few weeks later, I think a bit of the shine of a new car had been knocked off for her though

Mate of mine sold Mini's when they first came out (early 2k's not 60's lol!).

Guy buys mini for his daughter, refuses GAP, she picks her mates up, hits a kerb and hits a wall, very minor damage, girl in the back has a full on panic attack and the fire brigade turn up and take the roof off to get her out, he phones and said I'll have that GAP after all! I'm going back a bit but I'm sure he somehow got it through for him.

What is a panic attack? Is it a new thing?

What the car dealers temperature check at the moment?

High interest rates on finance, high car prices, low stock meaning a big turn down in the market?

It's a mixed bag. We're flat out mainly on New and Used. APRs on some models have been actually reduced to 4.9%.

Electric cars are still pretty dire. Just too expensive compared to Petrol and Diesel models and look even worse value now Tesla have reduced their prices. We're finding ourselves in a situation where we can deliver you an electric car tomorrow but most petrol engines are new year at least.

I don’t think I’d want it after repair, if I was intent on buying new!

Private buyers for electric cars must be few and far between? Too risky to buy cash, low GFV means a PCP is expensive

My current PCH is up in October so I’m trying to work out what to do. Looks like a £30k Vw golf bought cash might be a safer bet than something more exotic (unsurprisingly )

Any Land Rover sales people out there?

Is Velar production coming to an early end? I hear F-Pace is finishing and as it is the same platform, is it so for Velar?

Also, is it true there will be no Velar-sized replacement and that JLR are looking at around the £100k for the prices of their cheapest car?

So, no Evoque or Disco Sport sized cars in future?

Or is this above just pub talk - ie a load of bks?

I suspect the F Pace and Jaguars in general are being phased out, that’s the chat I’ve seen on US forums.

Hasn't the Velar just been updated to the same big screen display and no HVAC buttons like the updated Disco Sport?

I picked a new EV up a few weeks back. Got maybe 50 metres from dealers and saw a very tiny warning triangle. Turned round took it back. It had issues with the airbag pressures not remaining steady. They gave me an identical car even down to the colour and 20 hrs later delivered my car 30 miles to my home address. I think they handled it well. The car had been on display for 12 weeks with a lava lamp plugged in demonstrating its ability to power external accessories. I think this killed it!

A light facelift, yes.
