Granted it was a different Escort Cabriolet but didn't Top Gear buy one for 600 quid for a cheap convertible feature ?

That is probably around what most folk would value this article's pile of white dog poo.
Top Gear managed to spend £10k on a Maserati that left its engine all over the road and was slower than your Nan on a bike!
They fetch up to 100k now so old car inflation is rife everywhere really

Wouldn’t want either of them

+1 Remember that episode, funny and sad in equal measures smile

In terms of old cabs, I have a Merc E320 Sportline that is worth half, on a good day, what this car is up for. I also have a Saab 900 Turbo S cab worth even less. OK the Saab, like the Ford, is a bit pram-like, but the Merc is genuinely pretty. And both are way better built, nicer to drive, and have far better interiors.

I'd rather drive either of them than the Escort; and you can, for less money. OK, low mileage ones may cost the same as the Escort, but it's still no contest, IMHO.

So many better value old convertibles available. Ignore the looks, just the cabin ambiance of an old German alone is worth picking one over the Ford.

Edited to add gratuitous good value old convertible pics.

Good times. We had a ZX Spectrum. Not your 16k nonsense either. 48 KB of raw computing power. smile
Same, but these Escort cabs were hideous new, have not aged well

I remember when I used to be nostalgic about these things.

Don't remember Shakin' Stevens being in it (above) but there you go. smile

Needs someone with very fat bank balance and a healthy dose of nostalgia, can’t see that happening.

There are lots of better options available at half the price, my choice being a BMW E30. Yes 27,000 is low mileage, but it was a rubbish car when new, nothing has changed that.

At a stretch 20% of asking price, but I still wouldn’t.

'Admittedly, there are marks and blemishes around the bodywork, but we wanted to leave the car as we found it, offering the new owner the ability to decide how to progress with it'

At least its price to reflect this.... oh wait...

It's an old Escort - when I had one I wish had said 'marks and blemishes' rather than 'rust' and 'filler'

Well, it’s happened before with Golfs and Escort cabrios from that era selling for 20k plus …… so I guess they’re chancing their arm like most sellers.

I don’t think I’ve seen the 205 droptops fetch that much though and although the hatch cabriolet of that era were all wobbly boats with no metal roof, the 205 was definitely the best to drive imo

Wow... What a wonderful car community. Lots of people who don't own one of these slagging them off because they're not their cup of tea or because they think they shouldn't be worth as much as THIS ONE SOLD FOR within a month. PMSL... I had an identical one for many years and it's ludicrous how much good feedback we got from Joe Public. If I had a fiver for every time I got asked to sell it I would have retired, people have even followed me in traffic to ask if it's for sale! People of all age would talk to me about it and I'd even catch people taking photos! The amount of wonderful memories I had with my family in that silly Escort... Priceless. You little keyboard warriors must own some pretty amazing classic cars to come here slating true 80s classics like this one!

Escort 1.6i cabriolet was my dream real-world car back in the eighties. i.e. one that I might have a chance of owning one day.

The Golf cabriolet of the time looked like a pram in comparison.

Ford marketing department was top of its game in the eighties.

Thanks lol... I don't normally comment on stuff but hate seeing hatred towards another guys love. People are generally sound but give them an alias and they become like dogs behind fences barking for the sake of it lol

£24k.

I had massively underestimated the growth in the market for 80s Essex girl cosplay accessories.

Would they be willing to throw in a Pauline Calf outfit?
