No body liked Bangles stuff either 20 years ago. The E39 BMW sold about 1.4m worldwide and the replacement E60 about 1.3m. There could be many reasons there being marginally less.
Bangle was challenging the norm, and as a result his cars have mostly stood the test of time. This, on the other hand is crass, lazy, vulgar and in no way forward looking. It’s one of those cars that future generations will look back on and think WTF.
The M3/4 and 4 Series are a paragon of good taste in comparison to this.
There are many cars I don’t personally desire but can understand why they are made the way they are and can perceive as being “a success”. Sold loads/proved popular/highly profitable/extended brand awareness/broke into a new niche/rescued the company/whatever.
Think of all the very well rewarded people who’ve spent the last five or six years, spending hundreds upon hundreds of millions bringing this to market. Do you imagine in their heart of hearts they look at this and think to themselves “Nailed it”?
Will this ever be thought of as “a success” for BMW? I guess we’ll see but sitting here I can’t help wondering.

The best I could ever say for the E60/E65 was that Bangle's intent and audacity were laudable, plus he succeeded in making elements of his design language mainstream; but they're comfortably the least attractive iterations of their type (excluding the new 7.) This, on the other hand is crass, lazy, vulgar and in no way forward looking. It’s one of those cars that future generations will look back on and think WTF.

Bangle vs today is a matter of degree; his cars maxed-out at a 6 on challenging/unattractive dial, the current generation are an 8+.
Is the BMW design department now trolling people? Illuminating the design feature which 99% of people absolutely hate…so you can even see it in the dark….
Honestly the whole range (minus M2 / M5) is now completely gopping, no other word for it.
Also - some argued the new M3 grille design would over time look better…it doesn’t, it really really doesn’t

Jesus Christ !!
2.8 Tonnes. Really? Our road network which is crumbling around us can't cope with cars getting heavier and heavier.
It looks awful. The interior looks ok, apart from the huge Ipad thing, that I still hate.
On the plus side, it does still have a V8 engine. So well done BMW for that.
So ..... Ugly, tasteless, too heavy, very expensive. It'll be a sales success !
