Yup, I thought the record was somewhere about 55/56 mins, but could be as low as 52. Late 80s when the M25 was completed, Dartford to Dartford cos slowing for the tolls reduced the average otherwise.

IIRC the guy who did it is now deceased. He tried something similar - and failed...
As far as camras preventing the fun now, arn't the variable ones only active when the lower limits on? Otherwise i didn't think there were any camras other than the road work heathrow gatsos?
Going north from the m40 all the way to Romford there are no camras, if there are they don't work, or are not active between 4 - 5 am on saturday mornings, did that stretch at no less than 115mph and upto 160+mph about 5 months ago, no post came.
At that time of day the roads basically empty so traffic isn't an issue to this day.

sorry to bring this old topic back into light, but im just trying to research into the guys who used to meet up and race round the M25 in the early days but mainly the early 80s, im hoping to write a piece on the subject, but it's so hard to find any info out. AFAIK they used to have Orbital (the band) stickers on their cars but that and a record of around 52 mins is all i know. can anyone help?

Back in 2002 (funnily enough, in the GT2!!) i did a lap in 45 mins and something seconds. No video evidence though. (146ish average). To be fair though, we did it for a laugh, not for a record, so anyone with a 150mph motor, would, in theory, be able to beat it.
If the above quote is correct, it's not.......

That's what everyone does!!
Even the police don't seem to mind people driving responsibly going past them at that sort of pace (although I suspect it heavily depends on the policeman in question!!)
I (err, have a friend) who hits three figures most evenings on the way back from work. I'm told you just have to look out for any suspiciously neat, large saloons, or cars on the hard shoulder!!

Lonman, what did you do at dartford or was that your start and end point?
I was asked to add to this post . Back in 1989-1990 the M25 Midnight Club met up monthly very early Sunday Morning or late Saturday night . We used to meet at the services , albeit we living near Heathrow Airport M25 at that time . I used to go with my late friend Ross, in my bright red Porsche Turbo , Ross had 16"forearms and huge biceps so we never once had any altercations with timing issues ,
The hour was broken in 1989 on a Sunday Evening by a BMW M3 , we continued to try to get it down , the best I achieved was 59.45 that stuck for about 1 month . Then as more attempts were made I think to get below 55 minutes it kind of pittered out ,as a chap on a motorcycle smoked the lot of us with an unholy time of about 50 mins . Then the Police got involved and that was that really .
Few of us went on to participate in Road events like Cannonball and Gumball , these are well co-ordinated long runs across Countries & Continants . More fun now & Rallies rather than actual races as the German and French Police have had a major crackdown in recent years . The consequences are quite stiff with imprisonment and conviscation as well as hefty fines . The most famous I consider of all the road racers is a certain Mr Roy an American who through guile and amazing tech complete with giant cahonas was legitimately timed at the coast to coast record in under 30 hours averaging 140mph. A feat supposedly bettered but not proven , Making Mr Ross as far as I'm concerned the King of all Road Racing over the last 20 years . I hope you all found this of some use . Alex Roy is certainly well known for his exploits but he did not set a US coast to coast time of under 30 hours. His record (when set) time was 31 hours 04 minutes.Nor did he average 140mph. Simple maths shows that such a claim is nonsense. That time for a transcontinental distance of 2800 miles translates to an average of 90mph.
You're conflating average speed with the maximum attained. Two quite different things.
