MG? They might have bought the badge, but they didn;t get the soul. Buy British.

Strange name. ‘What do you drive?’. A Cyberster. A what now? Still, could be worse and have BUILD YOUR DREAMS plastered across the back.

Good for them. A new two-seater isn't announced often enough.

That said, key attributes are disappointing. All imho of course.

- This is a 21st-century touring car that - hand us the glue, let's slap it on there - just happens to bear the MG logo.

- Almost nothing fundamental to the design or heritage of MG is present: size, weight, a certain understatement, agility over power, born of the B road.

- The dissonance between product and brand will be of no consequence to the car's likely markets: status-conscious achievers in China and Southeast Asia.

It looks like it was designed by AI, with lots of elements taken from other cars. It's an OK looking car, just totally derivative and without the badges it could easily be a kit car. The elephant in the room - and I'm not really talking metaphorically - is this:

Article said:
It must look even better at a motor show seemingly populated only by chubby SUVs [...] apparently the firm has endeavoured to keep the Cyberster under two tonnes
So rather than a chubby SUV, it's a chubby "sports car". It goes without saying, that is far too heavy. You can say all you want about the weight being low, but you still have to get it stopped and turned.

I'm sure someone will work out how to make a decent EV sportscar, but this lard-arse isn't it.

ETA - it'll probably cost a bloody fortune too.

Company ownership removes this from my motoring landscape entirely. It may be pathetic and invisible but if you’re going to take a stand, you have to start somewhere. Sorry MG but then you died a long time ago.

Stunning looks! Love it. Change the name, though!

Looks good but wouldn’t own a Chinese car
So if it wasn't Chinese, would you like it? Say it was German or Italian or something like that - would you like it then?

Although being an Esprit fanatic, I comment on Chines MG.
Here is my wife’s one (Mk II, 1.8). We always saw the MGf as the Elise for shopping.
It is lovable but not special.

Can we afford a new one, yes. Do we want to change, sorry no.

I like it - although I am sure the final version will be watered down / lose the snazzy doors etc. I have an MG4 (as well as a Petrol Evora and Mini Cooper S so I am not some save the planet non petrol head).
If people are going to refuse to buy a car "because its Chinese etc" - your choice of course - but then that removes most of the modern cars from your choice - where do most of the electrical components / chips / batteries come from ?? and while you're at - don't buy any smartphones / satnavs / speakers etc....

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the average person just refers to the brand they own nowadays and nothing else..

A friend's colleague recently got a new Skoda company car, couldn't even remember the model, just said it was a 'Karaka-something..."

I'm pretty sure this is the production version?

Looks like there is a divide about this MG being Chinese. Since the tech won't be able to meet current Western standards, this problem will resolve itself. At least it isn't a Tesla....

It can't possible be worse than what VAG are putting in their cars at the moment.

rolleyes

You don't see any difference between spending 50k 100% of which goes to the Chinese government (who are economically, strategically and now militarily aligned against us) and 50k on a non-Chinese car maybe 2-3k of which goes to China for cheap IC's, sensors and LCD's? Incidentally, the IP of the latter is mostly owned by western OEM suppliers. "While we're at it", yes you can make an effort to not buy Chinese made consumer goods, I do, but in any event again large difference between a whole car and a speaker. Not always possible to avoid of course and sometimes just impossible to know but in the case of MG, you know full well.

It's extremely easy to avoid buying a Chinese car. It's extremely difficult to specify where your petrol comes from. Does that help?

Our security services warned us about Russia. We did nothing. They warn us about China. We continue to sell our businesses and off-shore manufacturing. We cannot change everything, and often have no choice but to buy Chinese, but cars are one big purchase where I feel I should put my heart in and not sell out. Also, this is a look that I wouldn’t want to be seen in.

Is this more BS, you don't have any actual release sales pricing I take it then MG.

As they were pushing their concepts at least 4 years ago starting with Emotion and its probably changed about as many times.

Why should they be believed now lol.

Plus would have to be a bit mental to part with the sort of cash they want for a stylishly but big depreciating battery. Nah, thanks.
