They have not copied Alfa wheels, they have been using a near identical design on Skodas for years.

The Golf 'Interesting' GTi... They have knocked the bland requirement out of the park this time. It certainly needs the GTi badges on every side.

Do full on side decals next. And do charge 10k extra for doing them in carbon.

For me the Mk 7/7.5 was peak golf… especially in three door form.

It just smacks of can’t be arsed now…. Moving to all EVs soon here is a mild facelift to flog some parts…. I’m sure it’s nice but not trying.

Re the wheels I suspect it’s an update of the Mk 5 golf gti wheel they are going for rather than an Alfa copy

Was just about to say the same, but in 5-door form.

Which is opposite to the Mk 2 - hated the 5-door but loved the 3-door.

going to buck the trend and say i like it. Door GTI badges need to be burnt with fire as they look gash, but rest of it is nice, Especially the colour

I've used my brothers mk8 Gti Clubsport (same colour as the one in picture) a few times and really liked it. Yes the controls were fiddly but most cars are when you have short time with them. He's never moaned about his though. but internet has jumped on the controls issue being an issue yet most have never tried one.

So if the mk8.5 is the swansong then i assume it will be better. they are a lovely place to be, quick, handle fine and if you want a family car that is also a bit lively for the odd occasion you can use it, then what else fits the bill and yet remains classy.

I like it.

Illuminated badges look naff, as do those door badges.
They need the badges to identify it's a VW. If you cover the front with your thumb it looks like an old Peugeot!
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of VW's design language

FFS Volkswagen, I was hoping for something better than that to tempt the MK7 owners out of theirs so I could snap up a nice MK7 PP version!!!

GTE sounds a decent product to me with 60 miles of claimed electric range and 270bhp.

Sure it will be popular via salary sacrifice schemes etc.

I mean it's a golf GTI so it's probably going to be decent and a little shocked at the hate for it.

It's still petrol and reasonably sized. It still looks better than almost every BMW they currently make, not to mention the droves of SUVs. DSGs are very good and everything is going to be auto in a few years anyway. It's definitely alright

I do hate the new Golf (and any other car that has it) strip lights on the front though.

As a former mk8 gti owner, this looks to be a bit better interior wise. Of course the proof will be in how well the software works. The mk8 was fking dreadful to the point of being near unusable. Map glitches meant the sat nav rarely worked and the heated seats and steering wheel had a minds of their own, then there was the traffic sign assist constantly failing and bonging away…

Door badges look st. And I suspect it’ll be over 40k quite easily with an option or two. Luxury tax on a gti?

Anyway I pick up my 2016 leon cupra 290 on Friday.

Lost interest as soon as they dropped the 3 door.

The 4 door looks like a mumsey family hatch with practical features. Rubbish.

Not for me.

I can't get past the opinion that the MK8 GTI and R, without any new drivetrains or meaningful chassis changes were MK7s made worse and cheaper to produce, whilst at the same time being way more expensive.

I’m with you there. I’d like to get a replacement sorted out for the leased Leon Cupra ST which I handed back last year and I think a low mileage Mk7 GTi / R would make for a great long termer.

They are a bit, but I was thinking they were referencing the MK5 GTI wheels.

Yet a further reminder that peak ICE was well before Covid, largely efficient engines without additional hybrid complexity, no exhaust filters so they generally sounded pretty good, the goldilocks optimum of screen to dial ratio and driver assist systems that could easily be turned off with a complete absence of warning bongs. Remember this new Mk 8.5 will be festooned with even more driver alert systems/warning sounds due to 2024 MY EU Regs and still no physical HVAC dials. No need for Mk 7.5 lovers to upgrade IMO.

It honestly doesn't matter how good these things may be, when i see one I immediately think the person driving it has no passion about cars in general.

Interesting. When I see one I think the driver has selected a fine drive over bling and a need to show off.

Sorry and surprised to see the hate for these on PH, has bling and size won?

Strange outlook IMO. Is that a thing for you in general? You don't like it, so there must be something wrong with the person who does?
