I've got a mk7.5 performance pack coming this week with absolutely zero regrets. 245bhp, a better quality interior, physical buttons and it still has Carplay/Android Auto.

The 8 was a dud, built to a cost during covid and rushed out with quality control issues still being resolved nearly four years in. I hope the 8.5 is much improved as I'd look at a clubsport in a few years.
You'll love it. Bought our fully loaded Mk 7 pp just as they released the CS and 7.5 new with a whopping discount for approaching £30k feeling it was way over the top money (list was £38k) for a hatchback / GTI in 2016. How wrong I was its been amazing with zero issues over 60,000 miles. Point to point on a give and take UK b road they are fantastic so well suited to our roads. All the car you'll ever need.

Strong. Lord knows what you make of people who roll in a Daewoo Matiz.

I agree with that. At the same time though, it's been hard to get excited about a new Golf since maybe the mk5 (IMHO).

I started my VAG journey with a (red) Rabbit GTi Mk1, followed by a Mk2, before jumping ship to Seat and Skoda when Golfs went too upmarket (and got too expensive) for my tastes. I do regret not having owned a Mk5 though...they were (and still are) very nice cars.

not enough power imo when you can get a 430hp 4wd MG for £35kish

can see the appeal as a warm daily driver though for someone needing a petrol car etc, dread to think of how much it's going to cost when spec'd nicely

I like it. As an all round car this will be a good car. I'm not getting the negativity on here.
Looks like they have addressed the issues . I would buy one of these ,or the r when released.

Sorry and surprised to see the hate for these on PH, has bling and size won?
PH has a hate boner for the Golf for some reason. We have a Mk5 GTI, and as a poster above has mentioned, the wheels on this new one are clearly referencing that car not an Alfa rolleyes

Golf GTIs are great cars, I'd argue people that have one are more car people than a lot of other hot hatch owners, including the Golf R.

I know leccy cars have desensitised us to power figures, but you cant call 265 bhp 'warm' surely....

I think it goes 2 ways, First, the are leased and stay standard. These owners just like to say they have a golf.

The other side, they have pop and fart maps on aftermarket wheels, with coilovers. They shout at everyone they have a GTI/Golf R

That's better.

Wheel design far better than current offerings, and improves the overall look as a result.

Infotainment revisions are welcome.

Sad I can't have a manual. When "interesting" versions come out I might try one, but being a sad old luddite I'll probably moan about the lack of pedals too much to pull the trigger.

Will have had my MK7 for 5 years next week.

Strange outlook IMO. Is that a thing for you in general? You don't like it, so there must be something wrong with the person who does?
It's all personal taste, nothing against the drivers of these, as i said they're clearly good cars but for the money i'd rather be in something with a bit more soul. The new ones of these do nothing for me anymore. Plus the whole fast Golf thing has been ruined by Golf R 'drivers', if i was to buy one it would be a GTI every time over an R.

"But let’s not get bogged down by interior details too much" - no no no lets. Because it's where you actually sit and interact with the car. And you can't, because it's got a terrible heating and ventilation system.

Hearsay, or personal experience? I've had a couple of MK8 loaners, and I can't say I struggled too much. The temperature sliders aren't great, but they certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if the rest of the car was brilliant. At least they're illuminated now. My up! GTI has non-illuminated window and mirror controls on the drivers door, meaning in the dark it's completely impossible to know which position the mirror switch is in! Drives me insane.

Doesn’t appeal to me much, but I’ve never got on with the looks of the Mk8.

The door badges are awful.

Doesnt look like a GTI at all. Looks like a low spec with R line type add on looks. Disappointing.
