I have hired often from Alicante, usually for a week or so at a time to go up and down the coast. I try and stay with known companies for fear of being ripped off on damages.

It's usually around £250 for the week for a Fiesta/Polo/Ibiza including the excess insurance. I have had one occasion where it was about half that price and I was "upgraded" to a Vauxhall Meriva (touring model maybe?).

The last time I rented a car in the UK was with AVIS and I got a parking ticket through the post for dropping the car back to the hotel where I picked it up from. The AVIS man basically didn't get the car in time and it got a ticket which they tried to put on me. Can't remember how I got out of it now but AVIS basically just ignored me and denied it.

Have just rented a car for collection in LA in a couple weeks. Paid £400 for a Range Rover / BMW X7 or equivalent for a week with unlimited mileage and all the excess included which I thought was quite a good price!

Drivalia - business model - quote cheap and fleece the customer for damage that they probably won't notice was there already as the cars are so damaged before you hire it - keep the " repair" money and flog the cars at auction with the damage
I’ve used Drivalia - their cheapo “contactless” system is rubbish. Book and get confirmation, then you have to speak to an operator at the collection site who won’t release the keys until you give your credit card number. Which you don’t have with you…
