Thing is, I'd rather just buy an older sports car in the same category for £30k and suck up the £695 tax and lower MPG.

I mean, I could pick up a DB9 for £20k and shrug off the V12 tick rebuild cost, and still have cash in my pocket vs buying this new AMG GT. biggrin
You could also pick up a pre March 2006 A8 SWB sport quattro with a reliable 450hp W12 that won't need rebuilding - and has variable valve timing-and £395 tax - for a mere £10k, if you can actually find one (only about 60 in the UK - and mine's not for sale!)
Interest car, but...

That is a perfect example of car forum nonsese; discussion is about a four pot brand new 100k+ Mercedes GT but a fanboy shoe horns in a mention of his old smoker Audi barge as a better choice hehe

Mercedes S600 twin turbo was better anyway wink

Who on earth is cross shopping between a 2 seater sports GT car and an Audi A8 laugh

Only on Pistonheads laugh

What a ridiculous suggestion.

I quite like the look of this, but a 2.0 litre 4 pot? No chance.

I just don't understand the thinking behind this.

If you are going make your last few ICE cars before EV comes into play full-time why not go out with a bang (suck, squeeze, blow)?

If it's about CO2 average then why bother? Just do EV sooner.

Bah!

Cheap skates version of a great car. Can’t see many people buying it. Whoever end up buying this 4 pot will ask for a badge delete

Also, anyone know why here it's the "43" yet in the A class it's the "45"?

A car like that needs a 6 pot, as a bare minimum.

I got as far as the dotted line on the showroom floor, but then settled on a Morris Oxford.

Fits in the garage better.

No idea but it is dumb.

There is a 43 in the C class which is the V6 just to confuse matters further.

How random. An article about a car we can’t even buy. That makes sense then…

Madness. So we have the 43 which is a 6 cylinder in thr cheaper car, but a 4 cylinder in the expensive car, but the same 43 engine in the expensive car gets a 45 name in the even cheaper car.

Total sense! hehe

Should have the V6 from the CLE53, could detune it to 420hp and it would make a much nicer noise and have a more fitting character.

Quite like the less OTT front end though.

Nobody wanted the C63 with that engine so why would anyone want to pay even more for this.
Different proposition: the C63 was the flagship, this is the starter model.

Even at 80k, it still isnt worth it if its got a 2.0 turbo. Yes the interior is nice but its got the same interior desgin as the C-Class so im not sure what youre getting for the SL badge. You're literally better off buying the CLE 53 AMG for the same price but more space.

I havent driven anything with the AMG 2.0 but i have driven the MK8 Golf R extensively and its just such a boring experience, its a fast car but once you get used to how quickly it shifts through the gears and gains speed, theres just nothing about it, just a 2.0, rightfully so!

The Golf R is a mundane day to day car with a powerful engine so I dont expect it to light my world on fire.

I dont know more than a multi billion pound car company like Mercedes Benz but I feel like they should have badged the lesser models like this as SL 350 for example and charged a lot less instead of marketing them as full fat AMG models like they did before, people forget there was a SL300 very recently with 230BHP, power isnt the problem, its the price attached to what youre getting.

Regardless of being the base GT it is still north of 100k.

No one is going to pay that money for a four pot GT, when you can get alternatives with proper engines in them.

Live in Singapore, or Belgium for example, then say that.

For reference - to own a new Toyota Camry hybrid in Singapore now costs £151k. Yes, you read that right.

I can understand why Mercedes UK have decided not to import this, given that it would probably cost well into 6 figures and don't think the market is ready to pay that sort of money for a 4 cylinder car.

Not really clear in which countries there would be a market for this, unless it fulfils some sort of tax break brief somewhere...
I think what's going to happen is that folk will buy an electric car (possibly even for BiK reasons) have an older diesel and or 4x4 for longer journeys and a V8 for fun... that's what I've done!

I would getting a 2nd hand older version - far better looking, V8, and save some bucks.
This - great cars! The SLS and GT are bespoke cars with their own front mid engine chassis/body, the new one is a cop out and just a rebodied SL. No roadster version either presumably because there’s a SL convertible? The new cars interior doesn’t look as interesting as the outgoing cars either, it’s just…wait for it…like the SL’s! Shame really
