I think a lot of the cash vs PCP comments miss the point- it’s not really cash vs PCP on a brand new car; very few people are actually in that position when it comes to buying. It’s more PCP/finance on a new car vs cash for something used. New cars have rarely been the best value, even now with increased prices.

A lot would be better off financially in the long run by going used and not necessarily make any trade offs in reliability. A lot of it comes down to people wanting to take the easiest path, and it’s easy/seductive to make that choice based on a relatively low monthly.

Would’ve expected a lot of downgrading for PCPers after the recent interest rate hikes. Coming to the end of their contract with a fat balloon payment on the cards which would usually would be refinanced with a new contract except rates are vastly more as are monthly repayments. Has anybody dropped off the treadmill? Odd that we haven’t had more of these examples, I guess you don’t post in that situation?
I'm planning on it. Currently paying 200 a month for an egolf. When it runs out next year I'm thinking about going back to bangernomics.

When my Q5 lease (405 per month) ran out Jan last year I splashed £12.5k on a 48000m Golf Alltrack Estate private purchase.

It is in many way a better car, meets my needs better (the Q5 was too nice/posh for my use), has a towbar and feels very liberating as I don't worry about it anywhere near as much.

Only thing I miss is the auto and a little power.

I have £500/month standing order going into a savings account too.

What website is this? All this I sold my Ferrari to buy a Skoda TDI and I'm having the time of my life is laughable.

Let's not kid ourselves, if you can comfortably afford it there's no reason to downgrade, and the lower down the rung of the ladder you go the lower the thrills, that's the cold, hard truth.

That's not to say you can't have fun, my mx5 was great, but putting money to the side my noble or lotus are way more fun.

There's a reason you very rarely see the lower end cars win ECOTY...

I've never used PCP, just bought my cars.

In January 2008 I bought a pre-registered 2007 BMW 123d for £21,895 that I sold in July 2014 for £6,600 because it was still depreciating, was starting to throw up bills after 80K miles, I didn't need a diesel as I wasn't doing business miles and the N47 engine had cam-chain issues.

So I bought a 2006 BMW Z4 Coupe for £9,600 that I sold in 2016 for a few hundred more.

Not really a downgrade I suppose but I realised buying the right car made sense.

A Skoda TDI would probably handle the B roads where I live better than a Ferrari hehe No... seriously! The Ferrari would be too wide and too low to handle it.

I do get what you're saying though, but I think for some people, it's a case of been there, got the T-shirt and they simply don't care about driving for fun any more. They've had their experiences and that's that. I'm not quite there yet, and I may never get to that point, but some of my mates were into it but they're just not bothered anymore.

Second paragraph hit the nail on the head, priorities change as we age, for some people anyway.

Downgrade eh?

Recently bought a motorhome, so didn't need a nearly new Santa Fe to tow our caravan.

Replaced with my mates old 2010 Lexus IS220d that i gave him £600 for. Compromises have been made !
