I love it. Not normally an electric car fan but I do like how they have kept the look as traditionally “car like” as possible. This means a grille at the front, normal looking wheels, proper knobs and buttons on the dash and not an i pad in sight.

You know what would be impressive? Under 2 tonnes with an efficient petrol hybrid system, GPF and ethically sourced battery heavy metals.
Ah yes, the worst of both worlds.

For people who are obsessed with 'the weight of things', is it because you can't see CO2 that it doesn't count?
Ahhhh CO2, someone's been watching too many YouTube videos by Greenpeace. I'm far more concerned about methane from the ice caps than CO2 from cars.
What about aircraft? Ships? Heavy industry? What do you think you breathe out?
If you are petrified of carbon dioxide then donate to a carbon capture farm, and go for a drive in a car of your choosing, not dictated by.

I'm waiting for someone to tell me that it will feel as light and nimble as my Caterham in the corners...even at 2890kg because of its low centre of gravity of where the batteries sit. biggrin

ICE SUVs get slagged off left, right and centre for their weight, but it is ok for EVs to weigh as much as the moon, because they're allegedly saving the planet. You can't help but laugh really.

If it doesn't matter, what's the point of the hybrid you want to see?

Just put a 7 litre V12 in it and crack on.

The point I'm making is that if you are going to try to decarbonise something, don't scratch at the surface, do a proper job.

Which is what Rolls have done...

I'm not a fan of either the front or rear lights but I suppose if I had the money RR could address that.
Other than that, as a car I quite like it.

I’m not sure anyone is saying it is ok, but there needs to be a realisation that EVs are in their infancy, and progress will see them get lighter. As ever, too many people judge them on the now, rather than having faith that very clever people will make them better.

The styling makes it look like a Chinese knockoff. Nobody gets near an RR interior though and with electric motors this will be virtually silent.

What I love about Rolls is that when they do something, they do it better than everybody else by a mile. I'm sure an EV will be the same.

Lovely thing, but I find it hard to imagine one of these queueing up for a charger at the motorway services. Will it even fit in the charging bay ?

Perfect car for EV adoption.
Range won’t be an issue as you waft between London office / club / shopping / town pad / country retreat 100 miles out of town.

Lee, that’s because you are (again) assuming that ‘weight’ is the only measure that defines a car’s environmental footprint.

(Nearly) all of the universe is either matter or energy.

Ignoring the energy component only tells you half the story.

Electric powertrains are vastly superior at minimising energy consumption from cradle to grave.

They do this by adding a manageable amount of additional mass to the car.

This saves an immensely larger amount of mass and energy outside of the car, where you can’t see or feel it.

But you should know all that, because you’ve read it a hundred times already…

I thought it just looked like an Audi A5.

And those wheels? Who at RR thought it was a good idea to compromise ride quality?

Stupid. But then it’s not aimed at me.

Maybe ugly is a bit strong but I've never liked the back end on the Wraith (and by extension, the Spectre) - something about the windows and the continuous taper of the roofline.

I can only guess that RR wanted something distinctive, but as a brand they have no heritage of building similar vehicles, so they were adrift and just plumped for something suitably baroque looking.

EVs of all kinds are affected by weight differently compared to ICE vehicles. It’s something that car journalists unfortunately frequently misunderstand, which doesn’t then help regular people learn about EVs.

For anything with regenerative braking(and a way of storing a large amount of regenerated energy so not a MHEV), the energy the braking system can recover over a given distance can be defined as E = mgh, where m is mass, g is gravitational force, and h is the change of vertical height from start to end. What this all means is that, given that current regen systems are easily 90%+ efficient, the weight of the vehicle become nearly irrelevant, as the extra energy expended to propel the vehicle, is 90%+ recovered, on a level surface. An ICE car will simply burn more energy because it has no ability to recover the energy that was expended.

That’s not to say of course that less weight doesn’t have other benefits, and as the owner of two moderately lightweight cars (although neither is Caterham light), I do appreciate how less weight alters the driving dynamics. But the idea that a heavy EV is more damaging or that it would have more range if it weighed less just isn’t true because of the fantastic work done on regen systems for the last decade.

In terms of things like pedestrian safety etc, of course being hit by less energy/mass is beneficial, but pedestrian safety is also driven by the kinematics of the human body against the shape of the vehicle, and it’s something that is better in a saloon than an SUV.

Of course on paper a 3 ton saloon looks profligate, but the reality is that it’s how and what that weight is used for, that is just as important when determining the value of the product
