Lotus 7 than a Caterham.

It's taken me ages to work out why. With the Lotus you get more history and more heritage and you're nearer to Colin Chapman and a few lads knocking up a work of genius over a weekend.

Slower and probably crude in comparison but by eck it would feel good.

I seriously wanted one of these in red when I was a teen. Mates taking the piss stopped me. I bet it would still be a laugh to drive to this day. It's a GTM Rossa for those wondering.

Than this, which is what I actually bought for my first car

I’d rather have:

Than this:

Which I never thought I would, but given the choice recently to sell the Range Rover & buy a DB9 I realised that I couldn’t part with it.

This thread got my attention as I also made this exact choice, well almost. An NA, and a old 90 Defender.

Personally, the cars i enjoy have always had bags of character and may be left wanting and outclassed by the performance or build other machines. But there is something about them the two above that means you’ll never part with them despite their flaws. The sum is greater than the parts?

A 996 Turbo than a Ferrari F430 or a Gallardo LP560-4.

Hear me out.

I mean, I would rather have an LP560-4 but for some reason I just cannot bring myself to get rid of the Porsche, which I've had for nearly 3 years. I've even contemplated getting rid of the dented old TT and buying one of the other cars but I need a vaguely practical and small car so if anything, here goes...

I'd rather have a Juke than a Gallardo LP560-4. nuts

I'd rather take a new Mercedes A200 Sedan than any other Mercedes Class, it is small and looks are updated to match most features of S class to the naked eye

Not a great car for a teenager.

Way back in the long ago when I was taking A levels, someone in the upper sixth had a Mini Midas kit car. His friends worked out in fairly short order that two of them could lift the back end off the ground and roll the thing along on its front wheels* like a sort of wheelbarrow. The Mini Midas ended up in all sorts of strange places round the college grounds...

  • I don't know why he didn't know that it would have been a good idea to leave the car in gear.

Err, I also quite fancied one. years (decades?) later I found one with a 1300 MG turbo engine, and thought it would be some mid-engined pocket sized fun.
It was horrible and I sold very quickly,

OK, I sold a near immaculate, TOP spec E34 M5 ..

and replaced with a HSV.

A hand built icon, replaced with a 4 door monaro.

I am clearly odd, but the m5 was just dull, give me a bit of rough any time.

I like the HSV so much a bought another later, but would never touch another BMW.

My cars are too rational.

I've got a Dacia because nicer cars of similar size and utility will lose as much in a year or two as I paid for the whole car brand new.

TVR because there isn't a cheaper way to get V8 noises in a RWD, 2 seater convertible with a manual box.

MG4 X-Power, tax efficient, cheap as chips way to a 430hp daily.

A typical Dull Man.

So would I, but then I am old!

Both my BMWs are teenagers - just. I still want manual gearboxes and N/A engines.

The best thing about those lot though, is that they all suit an auto because they are pipe and slippers cars really for me in fairness.

Disclaimer...I'm old anyway.

I'd rather have a poverty spec base model of a modern car rather than the "sporty" one.

The "sporty" version will have the same detached numb feel when driving it, just go a bit faster so what's the point other than for posing now even base model cars have a fairly decent spec in terms of standard equipment?
It's more enjoyable getting the most out of the perfectly adequate 100 ish bhp, and chucking it about on the narrower 65 profile tyres on the base model car. The money saving and lack of attention from car theives is useful too...
I think a lot of this comes down to budget. You like what you can afford… Last time I checked an FL5 Type R or M3 was a much better steer compared to the entry level version.

I prefer the older stuff, but when it comes to daily driving I’m a sucker for tech and reliability. Give me an E46 M3 vs a G80 all day for a weekend spin, but I’ll take the G80 as my daily no questions.

I have two too. One is 23 and the other is 32. One manual, one automatic but both with 3.0 straight-sixes.

Then I just need an 850CSi and a 928 and my collection will be complete. Maybe then I just need an old Alfa GTA and maybe a 1988 325i. And a Capri 280 Brooklands. And a Chevy Chevelle SS. And perhaps a Ducati 918. And a Porsche 918. Oh...
