RE: Volvo has built its last-ever diesel car

Diesel doesn’t make sense in the UK or Europe. Places are small comparatively to Australia where I am and a Diesel is perfect for driving from my place to my parents (800km) in a day. Add in carrying a bunch of crap like bikes and a roof box etc, the N57 in my BMW is perfect.
On the other hand when your round trip in the UK doesn’t even get the DPF up to temp, you’re looking at an emissions hazard and an early death for the diesel engine.
Of course diesels can make sense in the UK. DPF issues? Tell that to my Golf GT- 139k+ miles and counting without so much as the DPF light even coming on…On the other hand when your round trip in the UK doesn’t even get the DPF up to temp, you’re looking at an emissions hazard and an early death for the diesel engine.

Have to disagree with you, in central Europe we cover big kilometres just travelling to and from our summer house/cottages. Annual kilometres of family cars can be typically 30-40k km. The Skoda Superb diesel is everywhere and so are X5, Q7 and 5 series...all diesel because they nail the motoring profile perfectly. On the other hand when your round trip in the UK doesn’t even get the DPF up to temp, you’re looking at an emissions hazard and an early death for the diesel engine.

Of all the brands to survive electric transition I expect Volvo to have one of the best chances. Ecpecially if th Chinese can bring the price down.
You are correct in that 'volvo cars' are 100% a chinese owned company and will have decisions made that suit those chinese owners and the Chinese Communist Party ultimately. In terms of buying a new one a brand now best avoided. There will be some cover if bought on a relatively short term finance deal with a guaranteed buy back, but in the longer run a buyers will be on their own. Better, if you have no qualms about a chinese made car, get one branded as a VW or whatever as such European owned businesses will have to 'own' what they have sold you.... the chinese have no such concerns....Gericho said:
Volvo doesn't offer anything special anymore. They've essentially told traditional Volvo buyers to get lost. There is hardly any difference between the EX30 and any other generic Chinese EV. In fact, it IS a generic Chinese EV.
Sorry but I have to agree that Volvo isn't going to survive for much longer. It could be Polestar gone first though.
Have to disagree with this. I bought my S90 in 2018. It was a jewel, a striking looking car inside and out, with super premium materials and the best seats ever. They are still building cars like that, just with a different (better) drivetrain. As for made in China, mine was made in China. The build quality was exceptional. Sorry but I have to agree that Volvo isn't going to survive for much longer. It could be Polestar gone first though.

Absolute nonsense. Our plug in hybrid XC60 is a much better car than the diesel XC40 it replaced. Same fantastic safety. Understated style without the bling of Mercedes or the coal scuttle interior of an Audi. Massively impressive performance. Same economy on a long run, electric on a short run. Massively more refined than the nasty agricultural 4 pot diesel engine. What’s not to like?cerb4.5lee said:

In saying that, we all like different things though. I have a strong passion for an internal combustion engine, whereas I'd imagine that some folk have that same passion as me, but that passion is for batteries/electric motors instead. Even if that is personally difficult for me to believe if I'm completely honest.
Who would want to buy a 3, 4 or 5 year old milk float in a few years time unless at a knocked down price ?
My view is that EV owners will be in for a shock at the value of scalextric when trading in !
Check out you tube as it’s already happening.
Porsche are already refusing to take some of their own cars in part ex !

Again - best ever sales year last year. Non-issue
If only profits were as rosy.Volvo are treading a fine path that may backfire spectacularly.
"For the full year 2023, Volvo Car Group recorded a record-breaking core operating profit of SEK 25.6 billion."

My 3 year old Milk float is doing fine in the UK. It gives me a smile when some ICE drivers are surprised at the rate of acceleration. My view is that EV owners will be in for a shock at the value of scalextric when trading in !

As for the Taycan in my other place the residuals are doing fine.

Milk float? Scalextric? Is it any wonder these threads descend into slanging matches? Come on Kev, I’m sure you’re a better man than that. My view is that EV owners will be in for a shock at the value of scalextric when trading in !

But yes, I’ll check out YouTube, but only after I’ve finished reading the DM and Telegraph.

Have you just woken up from a 3 month nap?
You're a bit late to the pile-on.
Also, too much Youtube will rot your brain.
Saw it on Facebook.
