Good. Most diesels are hateful anyway. biggrin

Quite. People only like them because they're cheap.[adenoidal]Aw I get 700 miles for 30p[/adenoidal] Yeah 700 miserable, filthy miles. Good riddance.
That is exactly the same reason why folk like EVs as well I reckon.
I'd say convenience of home charging (for those lucky enough to have it), and the relative refinement/ease of use are probably higher on the list of things most people appreciate about EVs myself...rather than them just being cheap.
Judging by the posts on here, I thought the main reason people like EVs is because they want a reason to be smug and self-congratulatory?

Would have a D5 on the drive any day of the week.

Great engines and will be missed, however i will still be buying them SH until they run out.
Got a S80 d5 for winter and a C70 d5 for summer.

The 53 plate S80 (euro 3 I think) is a much nicer engine than the later 08 C70

There is that to be fair. Although I'm definitely sticking with the fact that they're cheap to have/run. If they didn't have the tax benefits and all that comes with that, plus if they cost the same to run as a diesel or petrol, then nobody would buy them/go near them I reckon.

I will be surprised if Volvo cars are still in business in the next decade.
Why? Battery will get better and more range and will become the mainstream for people. They want to be become fully electric by 2030.
yes Of all the brands to survive electric transition I expect Volvo to have one of the best chances. Ecpecially if th Chinese can bring the price down.

I have been looking at 5 series tourings and M340d’s recently. They sell really easily and for decent (for the sellers) prices. Diesel is not dead.

Meh, my next car will be diesel, fashionably late as usual me.

Yep. The M340d is a cracker. Same with the D3.

I was astonished by how awful the 4 cylinder clatterbox was in the Volvo XC90 that I travelled in. It has actually put me off buying one. Same with the Jaguar F pace 2.0d.

Aside from the range concerns, I'd honestly rather have an EV.

We have a diesel F Pace S. It has a twin turbo 3 litre engine that’s good for 300hp and 700Nm of torque. The attraction for me is the performance in a vehicle that makes my wife happy (“SUVs are safer for the children, easier for me with all the baby/toddler paraphernalia” et cetera). For the record, I wanted a C63S estate.
It’s ridiculous how fast and nimble an SUV can be when driven enthusiastically. Apparently, it’s also quite efficient when driven sensibly on the motorway. As long as we fill it with cat piss every 17000km to keep the evil death dust and NOX contained, it’s significantly less polluting than my usual daily drivers too (they are almost 20 years old, NA and designed to run at high rpm).
Undoubtedly, my wife’s next car will be PHEV or electric (depending how the Australian infrastructure evolves). She would rather like a Taycan and I don’t think environmental concerns have any bearing on that choice.

So give this 5 years to depreciate then I can buy it and run it for 200,000 miles. Should see me well past the grave and no need for a battery powered car ever. Not that they will have anything left to build batteries out of by then.

should be good news, we've a lovely 2019 b5 xc90. likely to go up in value as its the best engine they do in the car and the best solution for most buyers.

The way they're going it won't be long before they build their last ever car.

Volvo doesn't offer anything special anymore. They've essentially told traditional Volvo buyers to get lost. There is hardly any difference between the EX30 and any other generic Chinese EV. In fact, it IS a generic Chinese EV.

Sorry but I have to agree that Volvo isn't going to survive for much longer. It could be Polestar gone first though.

I suppose they could dig the lithium out of the landfills where all the end-of-life batteries will be buried, it's not like it gets burned and turned into something else.
Or if we are really, really clever, send them straight for recycling before burying them.

I have a D4 V40 R Design with the Polestar software. It’s a little agricultural, but does its job well. It’s rather swift, does over 50 MPG no matter how you drive it, and as it creeps just under the 99 g/km of C02 it is £0 to tax. It has proven to be a genuine competitor to a GT TDI Golf.

For me diesel just works.

What are you on about, they had their best sales year last year and about a third of their sales were electric… on that basis why the hell should they care?

What was special about Volvos of the past?

That won’t be popular - most people seem to prefer that we keep burying them in the sand next to our collective heads…

I fancied upgrading our MK1 XC90 to a MK2 but then realised they are 4 cylinder, so kept the D5.

Diesel doesn’t make sense in the UK or Europe. Places are small comparatively to Australia where I am and a Diesel is perfect for driving from my place to my parents (800km) in a day. Add in carrying a bunch of crap like bikes and a roof box etc, the N57 in my BMW is perfect.

On the other hand when your round trip in the UK doesn’t even get the DPF up to temp, you’re looking at an emissions hazard and an early death for the diesel engine.

Well, that’s no more Volvo estates and no more diesels. I’ll be hanging onto my V90 D4 for a few years more then… 😢
