RE: Mercedes E60 AMG | PH Heroes
Discussion
My dad had a W124 in 88, if was only the 200 but it had AC (ooh haha) he later had the a factory AMG kit put on it. Really well built car. He only clocked 12k miles from new. The guy who bought it was very lucky.
He change it in '96 for a E210 E320. Was very nice then but look which lasted longer.

I am fortunate to have owned a beautiful w124 E60 AMG in my collection for 20 years. Gloss (not metallic) black with black leather and DTM alloys option. I bought it from Germany and drove it home. They are factory limited to 250kmh. The Speedo needle literally went past 260kmh and kept going where there were no more digits…. Rock solid at 240-250kmh and could sit there all day. I had limiter removed so it’s good for 300 kmh plus ….Ride is hard but not crashy and the engine note is a cultured growl. It’s so solidly built and no modern day computers or ECUs. Servicing is simple and parts not expensive. A hand built machine put together without costs limits. It sits in a collection but is irreplaceable as a hand built machine and experience even alongside F12s, Alpina B5, Aston DBS etc, E92 M3 manual competition pack, I appreciate there are lots of amazing cars out there for £200k but that’s not the point. This is a hand made weapon that is designed to be understated and will likely last another half a century. If you have the chance to drive one/own you must….
You can’t write a post like that and omit a picture or two!I regret not buying a nice 300E when I had the chance… a 500E or E60 would be the perfect car for the rest of my life.
Ooof! The archetypical brute in a Savile Row suit (or whatever the German equivalent to Savile Row is!). What a beast - I've always loved the 500E/E500, ever since reading about them in Performance Car magazine back in the day, especially the involvement of Porsche. Completely forgot that AMG did a bit of fettling with one, so brilliant to read this article about it now. Superb!
This one will be coming up for sale soon

I wonder how easy it is to have a car exported from Thailand

That's very nice. Retail silver or not, it looks great and the interior is a good match. Very low mileage for one these too.https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1993-mercedes-...

Interior and wheels do not look like original OEM EU specification.
Circa 30k miles in circa 30 years sounds very low. Always good to check out the history and particularly with what looks like a Japanese delivered vehicle.

The interior is known as Roser leather (after the company who made it) and is part of the Limited pack - code 958.
I bought one of the original 500 batch of 500Es in 1991 and still have it.
I am surprised to read the manufactured numbers. I know the originally made 500, then 1000 more with the facelift grille etc.
About 12 of the originals were sold in the UK, I believe.
Michael Schumacher had an AMG modified one with a longer final drive, mine quickly hits the rev limiter in top gear, for higher top speed but it made 1st gear too long so low speed acceleration was worse than mine.
The low gearing isn’t good for efficiency though, 20 mpg normally and 9 mpg pressing on.

Perhaps it's not one of the original 40-odd AMG cars as there was a second official after market version for Japan wasn't there?Circa 30k miles in circa 30 years sounds very low. Always good to check out the history and particularly with what looks like a Japanese delivered vehicle.
IIRC the key is a certain technical code (957?) which denotes an original AMG car?

the car what MC had owned was I guess that 560 SL based AMG 6.0 ? a lovely SL which personally I like more then the e60I am surprised to read the manufactured numbers. I know the originally made 500, then 1000 more with the facelift grille etc.

The car has non standard 5 spoke HRE wheels that you might find on a RUF Porsche for example. The Limited wheels are the 6 spoke wheels like you see on the car in the article.
So all in, it may not be a €200k example.
The car is in Thailand and there is a video of a German guy in Thailand claiming to have the only E60 in the country. It is silver like this but a non sunroof car ex Japan, but with the same Porsche wheels so this one may be his too. Strange that 2 ultra rare cars are in Thailand with the same aftermarket wheels.....

Can't help thinking these W124s are best kept simple. Even this E60 monster won't feel that quick by todays standards. But the simpler very early straight six models before any of the updates offer an elegance and character that the moderns lack.
I far prefer the very earliest iteration of the interior, with zebrano wood and flat door card inserts, like these:
The later cars with the rouched leather panels, walnut and extra inlays in the door cards etc are tacky to my eye.
The early ones like that before they started tarting them up dubiously are quite hard to find.

No, Michael had loads of Mercs, the one he compared with mine was an AMG modified 500E saloon just like mine except for the AMG mods, which he didhn't like because to get a higher top speed which he hardly ever used the low speed acceleration was markedly worse.https://mercedesblog.com/rare-mercedes-sl-roadster...
Not surprising since the first gear on mine was pretty long with the standard final drive ratio.
