Using an inflation calculator this car should be approx £43k from the original S3 price list from 2002. Audi taking to piss as usual.

That assumes no manufacturing cost increase. Clearly every modern car is far more advanced and complex than the ones twenty years ago and therefore (obviously) more expensive, even accounting for inflation.

I personally don't want one, but to say this is overpriced because it's beyond inflation increases is either misleading or simplistic.
It is overpriced... simples...biglaugh

I had a brand new TTS in March 20 and to replace it with lesser specification as they were being run out was an extra £15K, which was just nuts. It was a damn good car, but not that good and the same applies here.

Audi are repositioning themselves and the danger is they will alienate too many customers and end up in a no mans land.

If you really want a S3, but one after 3 or 4 years.
And yet you can order a Mini Countryman for easily £58,000.

Yet it wouldn't see which way an S3 went. Everything is over priced.
You've just proven his point... its ALL overpriced and not at all great for 50k and especially at 58k for the Mini... these are terrible cars at that money... Relatively speaking....

You'd get an R8 etc... used, screw the running costs.. just get the previous model S3 for about 10 - 15k and You've got your daily..... Super or sports car plus the daily S3..... All for a 50k total.. probs much less.

Thats how bad the value in this car represents itself!!!

You're not supposed to look at an S3 and it be a toss up between that and "owning" an S3 (RS3 even) plus sports/super car .. MADNESS!!! biglaugh

If you can afford this... You can afford any RS3.... Got to be supremely dim to pick an S3 at this price over anything...biglaugh

Instead of the RS3 just being way more S3... The S3 has now just become the RS3 with its bks chopped off!!!... for 50k.....
Two things if I may.... Firstly, I'm not sure that's true. The RS3 does cost more. To say "if you can afford this, you can afford the other" may not be the case, what if you're already pushing your finances a bit. Where do you draw the line? If you can afford £50k you can afford £60k....well, why not push it more because if you can afford £60k then obviously you can afford £70k....oh, and £80k....

Secondly..... What if you're someone who thinks "the S3 is more than fast enough for me, why should I spend more money on something that I'm not fussed about?"

Its not just about speed tho as you point out.. The Rs3 has a much more superior engine for everything that matters.. Which you will be using every day.. Not to mention all the RS3 bells and whistles... Feel good factor would be way higher just doing the same things... and also have the option of having a that for way less money of you also don't mind buying used.. Either way the answer is now RS3... when looking at a 50k S3..

The RS3 is over 19% more expensive. If you can't understand that someone might be able to afford a car basically 20% more expensive the argument is pointless.

I don't like being that guy, as I'm an especially a big fan of these VAG hot-hatches, but it's really starting to just look like any other top spec S-Line model. Little things, like there's not even an S3 badge up front. I guess they're pushing the Golf as the more sporty variant, but for the money, this should look a bit more special. The diff from the RS3 is a good addition, but I really don't see why you'd go for one of these over a Golf R now. VAG cars are already fairly subtle anyway, so it's not like the VW is way more lairy in terms of styling. I don't see the interior being a big step up either.
