Funny how lots of comments are about the G being somehow old fashioned or a relic of a better time. I very much beg to differ. The G, in its current state and with its current target market, is extremely 2024.

The poor range is a big problem for a vehicle like this, say your going skiing 800 miles each way, autoroute speeds so 85mph the range is going to be 180 miles tops at 0 degrees, so 4/5 stops for at least an hour a time turns a 10/12 hour days driving to a 18 plus hour non starter.

I know it’s an outlier case but even if it could scrape 300 miles on a charge in the above scenario it would be (just) viable.

Irrelevance to most buyers but still it doesn’t feel like progress.
I know I'm banging on about it but there's 0 chance you'll get anywhere near 180 miles at 85 mph cruise.

Literally zero.
Indeed but what journey range would you actually need? Just take another car, fly etc. these are toys really.
Exactly. Would still fit most people use case in reality assuming you've got somewhere to plug it in each evening. It's just that a cross continental jaunt in winter is about as bad a scenario as you could get for one of these.

The range seems a little mean, i was hoping for a car of this size to have a range to be 350-400 with a real world range of at least 300 miles. 294 in the real world would probably translate to 200-220 miles.
How much range do you need to tool around London selling drugs?
That’s being very stereotypical!

I know at least one z list celebrity who owns one and a few football types. It’s not just pharmaceutical merchants.

I really think they need to bring back a pure "road tax" supplement to Vehicle Excise Duty based on vehicle weight.

In the last couple of decades we've had increasing amounts of SUVs, then EVs, and now SUV EVs.

It's no surprise we've had a correspondingly increasing pothole repair bill.
This is a good shout. Completely agree
Road wear/life is calculated/measured/designed in "Million Standard Axles", a standard axle being an HGV axle at approx 7-8T. A 3T vehicle, running on (presumably) fat, 300+ section tyres, won't put much more load on the road than a 1.8T Volvo on 185 section tyres from the 1980s.

The additional wear/damage these things will do to the road is almost immeasurably small.

A motor for each wheel should give this some extra off road capability and manoeuvrability in tight spaces.
Or for showing off in a shopping centre car park........
Say goodbye to your wheel bearings.

And tyres.

And the surface of the carpark.
I was wondering about this. I'm sure that Mercedes have done their engineering due diligence here, but surely there are forces exerted on running gear and tyres that they aren't specifically designed to withstand when performing the 360s? I'd love to know more if anyone knows about this stuff smile

Agree about the road surface - how would this affect asphalt on a warm day? Surely it would churn it up something rotten?

Assuming the weight quoted is the kerb weight that doesn't leave much payload before you reach the 3500kg limit.

I quite like the ICE Gs for their sheer ridiculousness but this seems a bit dull somehow, the whole character of most AMG Mercedes comes from the silly engine.

I'm absolutely not a potential customer (G350d professional aside maybe) so I'm not sure Mercedes particularly care what I think on any case!

Let's burn some fossil fuels
Let's rip up half of Peru to get the minerals for the battery
Let's use the energy from the first point to charge the battery
Let's load that huge battery into a 2.5 ton SUV, making it a 3 ton SUV

Hey presto an environmentally friendly car!

(if someone wants to draw the Born-Haber cycle for that to prove the previous statement feel free!)

I’m not sure it’s pitched as environmentally friendly. Or bought, by anybody, for that reason,

It’s a daft toy. I want one.

Small wheels - thank fk.

I wonder if you have to have all the daft Brent inside? It’s all a bit much. Surely they could save a bit of weight with all that nonsense.

They could charge more for it, if they liked. Just doesn’t matter at this end of the market. I’d pay ten grand NOT to have a the shiny lights and screens in the back.

If it’s a toy wouldn’t you prefer the G63?

I would.

That is crazy but it is literally 800kg plus of batteries/reinforcement.

In my eyes, that's a good thing. Nivas were brilliant wee things!! Mate had one with a two litre fiat twin cam. Absolutely blast.

Not really, sand will do the same thing.

What a bloody great thing this is.
