My Father used to be really into British cars, and his object of absolute automotive lust used to be a Triumph Stag rather than a 911/Ferrari/SL. I remember when I was really little, he ran a fire-engine red Triumph V6 saloon. In Ireland. He must have been considered absolutely radical at the time, as this was Ireland in the 70's and there can't have been many about. I never saw one. He was one of the first on the list for the SD1 when it was launched, and got a metallic gold 3500. We all though it was the most fantastic thing we'd ever seen. Within the first two weeks of ownership, I think he burst 20 blood vessels trying to get it to start, to run once started, and to stop once running. I'd say it went back to Rover with a steering wheel the shape of a banana, as my Dad tends to takes this stuff personally... Anyway, it went back to be replaced by a silver 3500 which was marginally better, and though he kept it for a year or so, I think it finished him. He bought a BMW after that, and never looked back.

This probably typifies a lot of owner's experiences, and it's a real shame Rover threw away the chance they had with the SD1 by deciding not to wait until the car was properly developed.

A friend of mine was competing in an Ex-Works Rover SD1 in the Classic Thunder/Heritage Touring Car series. This car was modified to a Tuscan 4.5 engine...

He has had the car for sale (www.fastroadandtrack.co.uk/frat/showad.php?adid=3149) over the winter. I am not sure if he sold it...

I hope to speak to him soon to find out his plans for this year if he still has the car. Last year at Brands Hatch he drove a great race in the Heritage Touring Car race and got a load of airtime on Motors TV.

I can't get that link to work from here - Google the following to see the pics/description: Ex-Works G2 Rover SD1 V8S
