A quick search of the DVLA database confirms that my late father's last car (a 1969 Triumph Vitesse) is still in ownership, question is 'where'?

He sold it in the early 90s to a student from Durham University, but that's all I know.

Sounds sad I know, but I'd quite like to see the old girl again. Father and I replaced the engine in 1979 and I'd like to see if our handiwork is still going.

Does anyone have any ideas how I could find out? Googling the reg does nothing, and I've posted on all the Triumph forums to no avail... frown
As with all these things, the DVLA will tell you...for a fee, and providing you have a good enough reason. This goes with any car of any age. I'm sure if you say you have some old photographs or somehting and would like to reunite them, they would tell you

Really?

If so, thank you.

I'd assumed the DVLA would play the 'data protection card' and that it would be pointless contacting them.

You used to be able to search any reg no on the RAC website for free & it would tell you what car it was attached to - great for finding if your old cars were still on the road & I guess good for checking your neighbours/relatives/mates cars really were what they claimed they were. Don't think the service is available any longer though?

Literally just stumbled across this topic tonight after seeing some images on Flickr of some old cars in a tunnel in Liverpool. I know the general consensus seems to be that cars without renewed tax, have been scrapped. However, one of the cars that still sits in this tunnel today (Citroen H-Van) appears not to have been taxed for over ten years. Yet it still exists. Very interesting indeed. Here's a link to the cars on Flickr! http://www.flickr.com/photos/danciminera/504518952...

Also, if anyone knows of (or comes across) a 1984 grey/black Citroen 2CV Charleston (A24 VLG) then do let me know! According to DVLA it still exists!...

A friend of mine saw my old MG shiny side down in a ditch a while ago. It's a shame, was my first car and I do miss it. Still, it's on the MID now so can't have been too catastrophic.

I feel sorry for whoever bought my old TT, S6 BYS. It was a right bag of bolts, amd I sold it to that webuyanycar crap. I can imagine someone having a major bill for the gearbox and rust that I found when I'd bought it (hence my quick switch), sorry frown

My Impreza is still for sale. I never wanted to get rid of it, but thanks to an insurance quote of £6,000 to renew I sadly said goodbye. It's still for sale and I'm very tempted to buy it back and run it alongside the VX.

It *might* still come up on the DVLA database, if that number plate was registered to the car. Worth giving it a go, I guess smile

I use the tyre search on tyre-shopper.co.uk. It tells you what type of car the plate is on. Then you can plug that info into the DVLA site to see if it's still on the road.

The same happened with an old diesel A4 of mine. The turbo started getting a bit noisy, I was selling it anyway and only actually found out when an Asian family came round, inspected and rejected it. I decided to cut my losses and chop it in at WBAC. They'd initially offered decent retail price but cut the offer by £700 due to the engine noise which I thought was fair.

Received a letter a couple of months ago from someone who had bought it at auction and wondered what the noise was. I deemed discretion the better part of valour and didn't reply. Caveat emptor.

Would love to know if my first car daytona yellow mk1 escort HPY257N is still about. Sold it to a guy who stuffed it into someone, last saw it at a breakers but was complete. Damage was very light so don't think it was terminal, but not showing it's not been taxed for a while so hope it's stuck in somebodies garage rather than in bits..

p/x'd my Nissan 200SX against my Impreza Turbo years ago at Subaru Main Dealer. Nissan dealer had told me that the turbo & brakes were due along with other stuff, some bast*rd had reversed over the (low) nosecone too leaving a big scrape so I made sure the car was filthy when they inspected it, covered the scrape nicely! I was amazed they took it after a lengthy inspection but they did so their problem!

My first car was recently broken for spares on eBay. My RS2000 just had 12 months tax put on it, my Focus RS is fine and my MX5 went to Sweden. I recently saw my shoddy old escort estate driving around - it had 214000 miles on it when I owned it 3 years ago!!!
