I have loved cars and anything to do with cars since I was out of nappies.
I have always avoided being too critical of any of the very few motoring shows that appear on our crowded screens. After all if we overtly criticise the only two credible motoring shows left, what will we be left with?
I have previously defended fifth gear (which I have watched consistently over the years). However, tonights episode was indefensible.
There was not sufficient content to pad out 30 mins of entertaining TV, let alone an hour.
Plato for reasons unknown appears to have jumped ship (or was he pushed?).
I know he has his detractors on this forum, but at least he has proved himself as a bona-fide driver/enthusiast. Who the hell is this charisma deficient new presenter? (Yes, I know he has presented a football show).
But what passion or even interest has he in cars??
There was none displayed.
There was absolutely nothing of interest to me tonight. There could have been, but any items of relevance were reduced to farce (MINI v. R/C car, EVO v. plane).
I will watch it next week, and probably the week after in the hope that things will improve. Yes, things were improving towards the end of the last series. However if things don't improve soon I might have to just accept that we may have only one (vaguely) motoring related show left.........

I missed this last night, so I thought I'd come and have a read in here to see if it was worth watching the repeat.

After reading through all 10 pages of this thread, I have come to the conclusion that its probably not...

Missed the beginning but saw most of it.
I wish I'd read a book for 50 minutes...

...and I thought VBH was supposed to be a good driver? Not the way she kept losing speed in the corners in the Mini GP she wasn't..

Fifth Gear used to provide a decent contrast to Top Gear.

But that was just plain dreadful in every sense of the word. Just glad that I recorded it and could skip most of the show on fast forward. Even the Gumball 3000 coverage on Extreme was better than that.

Yeah, total rubbish. I don't know whether they've tried to create some kind of unique style and just not had the balls to do new stunts other than those done previously on top gear, or if they ran out of cash and decided to save money by filming in a cafe with Tim Lovejoy who was probably only there to get some lunch in the first place. Not a good first show.

Well I think we're guarranteed to not be seeing a speed attempt in a jet powered car on Fifth Gear

Or maybe it would be good to see it!

Don't think much of the new series so far. Maybe they were kicked out of their old studio and had to go to the Ace cafe at short notice. How come they are on about the planet and conservation and then smash a car up for no good reason. Car against plane....err done before, maybe they will try a helicopter next week.... Sorry also been done before. Bring on TG.

Sorry to be a bit behind on things, but I've only just seen it - recorded it while I was out and the first opportunity to watch it.

OMG! What a pile of shite!

Whats with the cheesy music in the Mini vs. RC race....and why the race in the first place?

Why the Ace Cafe? And who the hell is that new muppet of a presenter?! Al gore on fifth gear? WTF?!

I thought the last series was much better!

Anyone think about e-mailing C5 with a link to this thread?

Apparently the 5th Gear crowd do read these forums, they even gave them a split-second free plug last series.

I missed the show so can't comment on it, but it sounds like they have at least tried to make some changes, which is to be commended. How many people here commented on how crap the fake 'office' set was? They've moved. How many people here were sick of looking at Jason Plato? Sounds like he's gone.

They are trying, and there are precious few car shows on telly. I don't think they have the chemistry between the presenters that TG has, nor the creative flair of their production team. That's not something you can fix overnight. As I say I haven't seen the show, but I'll stick my neck and say it can't have got worse. rolleyes

Just e-mailed them.....

Dear Fifth Gear team.

You have a problem.

One of the most respected online forums for motoring enthusiasts currently has 3 threads discussing the content of the new show. Keep reading especially the posts that were written after the show had started.

this thread

another thread

and another thread

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but buck up

I really feel I must add something positive to this thread.

I went to the Ace Cafe a couple of months ago ..... and the food was very good indeed. So you may have a point.

Just thought you might like to know that the new presenter, Jonny Smith has just replied on another forum I subscribe to:

Back to Fifth Gear....

Hello guys. Interesting to hear your comments. Sounds to me like 5th Gear needs some alternative ideas if it is to satisfy you. Well, rather than slate it completely, it would be great to hear what sort of thing you would want to see on the show. Naturally it does not have the budget of Top Gear (about £150k per episode compared to channel 5's £30k) so they have to spend their cash wisely. There are some interesting things in the pipeline though....

If you have any ideas you want to throw my way, I can put them to the producer and directors of North One TV (who do 5th Gear). I don't get to come on this forum as much as I'd like so please email me direct on jonnycarpervert@gmail.com.

I'm Jonny Smith, who presented my first bit on last week's show and used to work for FL4T and TOTAL VW magazine. That's where my career started, in VWs 9 years ago. Still got my '67 1500 bug and have owned a number of aircooleds, Golfs, yank tanks and other assorted shitters. I fully intend to bring some left-field features and motors onto 5th Gear so your opinions will be valued.

I bought a monkey bike off him a few years ago, and he's a good guy. I'm sure he'll appreciate any constructive emails....
