What punishment? If you crash into a wall or bridge, is it punishing you? I cannot believe rational people are still throwing these chestnuts in the fire. Victor you admit these people who crash into the bollards are morons, look at the video evidence again. They know they are there, that's why they are speeding up to try to get past them before they go up! They stop when they encounter resistence, hence thay are not smashing upwards into vehicles!
Why they are there is of no concern, they are there, and the people in the videos know they are there. If you want to crusade, people are killed eveyday by jumping red lights and crashing into vehicles. You should be more concerned about this IMHO.
As the man said, time to get a grip on reality!

If the bridge or wall pops up underneath your car, yes.

Doesn't pop up underneath your car though does it? If you look at the footage again, you will see in all the cases the bollards are raising in front of the vehicles racing to get through before they do.
Defending these clowns simply gives creedence to bad driving. If I drove through a swingbridge as it was rising, ignoring the barriers and audible alarms and impalled my car would that be the bridges fault?
Time to put this subject to bed, as I suspect the silly comments are only to throw more fuel on the fire and stir the broth!

Can we just clarify the situation here. I am assuming those not in favour of bollards are talking about accidental impact not these muppets who chance their arm.

Then how do they get under the car?

They don't. People drive into them, because they're idiots - and when you're an idiot in a car, Bad Things can happen. This is one of those Bad Things.

They do. They're underneath the car. To many of those motorists they're never visible at any time.

to all those arguing the toss, how many have been to manchester and seen those bolards in action, and how many are making stupid assumptions, on a matter that they have no real experiance on?

I've heard from people that live in Manchester and / or work on that very street.

Not one has said anything bad against them; that's good enough for me.

We've all done stupid things in our time, I once parked my mum's car back out of the way in front of the drive (as far back as I could so I could reverse around it) and then later on reversed into it with my dad's car as I forgot it was there as it wasn't full on behind me. It was my fault, I didn't rant and rave about trying to blame anyone else.

The recurring theme here (and my point) is that IF I was stupid enough to drive into such bollards, then I would be sheepishly driving off, not ranting about how draconian the system is.

It is different than running a red light because in that situation no device has consciously been fixed in place there that may bring you to a shuddering halt.
That's right, another innocent motorist fills the role. Perhaps we should have barriers or bollards at traffic lights too idea

Edited to add: In fact, now i've thought about it, why the hell not?

Because then someone might accidentally (or deliberately) hit that barrier. And then it'd be the fault of the authorities. Obviously. rolleyes

All the cars in the video are trying it on. I wouldn't follow that close behind on a normal road. The first bus though. He moves off before his passenger has alighted. Bad form.

Great idea. While you're there, lift up a few manhole covers (you'll need to put up a sign warning people not to fall into them, of course) and then video people stupid enough to fall into them anyway. With a bit of Benny Hill music in the background, that should be hilarious. Don't worry about the people who fall in, if they're stupid enough to fall into a hole after you've put signs up and everything, they deserve anything that happens to them. Send the video in to You've Been Framed (or whatever it's called now - Celebrity Big Brother Framed In the Jungle or something I expect) and you may even win a prize.

Why would someone follow someone else down a manhole?
