flemke,

Feel free not to answer, but what was the estimated speed differential between you and the numpty when he swerved in front of you?

In retrospect, would it have been better just to slam on the anchors and hit him?

(use of he/him is for convenience only)
I don't know what the speed diff was, but he was going slowly, and there was probably 3-4x as much space between my car and the next car in the middle lane as there was between mine and his. Plus, there was always the possibility that that middle lane car would move forward, creating additional forward space (of which I didn't need all that much additional), or that I could make it across to the exiting lane. I have no doubt that, given the situation, the right thing was to steer away from him.

Apparently the cars were also parked *rolls eyes*

I'm glad that everyone is ok, and also very pleased that you chose to repair rather than let another F1 fall of the road for good... after all, there have to be some available for me to buy when I become a multi-millionaire.

One question I have to ask (not sure if it's been covered so far), whats your country of origin, Flemke?
There is no reason of which I can conceive for letting the car fall off the road for good? confused It needs some body panels and a rad! If it had been a racing car, it would have been back on the circuit within 90 mins.
I was born in a place with a German name, and grew up in a place with an African name and places with Dutch names.

That was what I was thinking a bit later, after I knew that a collision was about to happen, in that seemingly timeless moment before it did happen.

Ouch. It looks horrible, but I bet the people who did the engineering design on those components are really rather satisfied with their work. What matters at the end of the day is not the number at the bottom of the repair bill, but that all the pink squishy things walked away. I wonder what would have happened to a less well engineered car.

On the subject of bloggers or "citizen journalists", I suspect many (or at least some) of them strive for higher standards of professionalism than much of the mainstream media does now. They at least try to do the best they can, whereas mainstream journos do just enough, and aren't averse to decorating the events in order to sell it. "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" and all that.

Chinese Whispers seems to be an increasing problem nowadays. You can tell when they have taken a press release, changed a few phrases and reissued it as their own work. It is more or less a word-search-and-replace job, but can end up totally changing the meaning. Local TV seem to be especially bad at this. Something that started out as "collided with" ends up as "slammed into".
The phenomena of modern life are intensely interesting. Amongst all the rest, each of us must reconcile ourselves that he or she may be exposed to unwanted, unwarranted attention, scrutiny or voyeurism, and, separately, that we can truly rely on only a fraction of what is presented to us as "fact".

Yes, it had a special crunchfulness about it.

I once saw a documentary about the psychological effects of having a crash. They, of course, wanted to have the insight of a racing driver. They, wisely (considering his experience on the subject), chose to interview Micheal Andretti. The Psychologist said that he was able to talk for 2 hours non-stop about an accident which had taken no more than 3 seconds from start to finish.

It is an interesting part of the "fight or flight" mechanism which makes the brain do this.

F, what would you say the speed of impact was? It looks quite low tbh. (Apologies if I have missed it already.)

Good to hear you and everyone else is okay!

Just wondering, how fast do you guess you were travelling when you actually hit the first car (I realise you might not want this on the forum so feel free to ignore me)?

I was surprised when I wrote off my S3 at the end of last year at how much damage there was, when the initial impact must have been below 30mph, however circumstances and materials were very different.

Don't. I am already feeling the same sensation as when someone fires up a dentist drill.

Let me get this right then, Flemke runs into the back of somebody else and tries to blame other parties!?

Awesome

I wonder how many of the proles on here would have received such a heroes welcome if they had posted something similar?

Alternative opinions and Devil's advocacy are always welcome, although in this case people who actually witnessed what happened, and the police, disagree with you.

Very sad to see something like this happen, but glad all involved are ok.

Do you think this accident will change your willingness to use the car in the future? As has been said, it would be great if you could include any pictures of the work that gets carried out, cheers.

I don't know, but not fast. It takes next-to-nothing to fracture a CF panel or deform a radiator.

Probably not.
The overall driving environment is steadily worsening, so that will affect my willingness to use it. I really wish that I had more insight into the precise factors that brought this about, as that could potentially influence my future actions.

On a serious note, am sorry to hear of the damage.

On an even serious-er note, what courtesy car did you get? Corsa 1.7 DTi???

Humans were involved, and one of them scarpered if that answers the question! Glad you and the car are (relatively) unscathed. Are you tempted to ask for ABS to be factored in to the rebuild? wink

Yeah, like I said a couple of pages ago, the damage looks comparable to Rowan Atkinson's accident, which apparently was at a stupidly slow speed.

I hope it isn't too bad though.

Do you have any photos of your own with any more detail? Or was it whisked straight off to Woking?
