You should buy the ones not made in Taiwan that will make your car understeer like a freight train.

Any chance you could make sense if you're going to take the piss?

He was referring to a recent thread about non "E" marked Eagle F1s that have found their way into the UK. These tyres were not designed for use in Europe and are of a different compound. I believe they were made in Thailand. They seem to be somewhat lacking in grip (!)
Search the forums, there is a recent thread about it which also mentions vendors who have supplied said tyres.

Would suggest you email both Blackcircles and Mytyres and play them off against each other - tell both of them that the other one is quoting and can they email you their best offer. I saved a further 140 quid doing this! Best of all when I told my local BMW stealer the quote, they undercut it by a tenner a corner and fitted them for free!

Lesson = lots of sales margin in tyres...

F1 long life's have a slightly harder compound and I've heard they're pants; as standard they are superb tyres but if you are a 'brisk' driver then you'll chew a set of standard F1's in around 8k-9k miles! Never had the long-life ones so can't comment apart from what I've heard; however in the wet you can't beat the standards and they're easy to retain control should you have an unplanned slide!! A great feature of the Evo 8 FQ I used to have!

Edited for sh1t spelling!

Erm, are you sure the 'XL' isn't referring to the GSD03 'eXtra Load" variant of the tyre? This is the same treadblocks, but with a stiffer sidewall.

Pedant on: Freight trains run on rails and therefore neither understeer nor oversteer. Pedant of...
Great tyres those Eagles, I had the non-long life version on my Golf and they improved it dramatically...

I missed off a T in not, sorry, but as Iain328 has explained, some goodyear F1's are not that sporty.

I only ran GSD3's on my WRX and used to manage about 15k miles per set (lots of motorway miles though, so the previous poster's 8-9k could be fairly accurate if used hard)

They are however the best tyres I've run, and would recommend them to anybody.

To be fair, I did use them hard when fitted to my old Evo VIII, hence the 8-9k. Got about 14k when fitted to the Lexus and decided they'd only do about 5k if fitted to the M5 and therefore went for something different (standard fit BMW Conti's are dreadful by the way!).

I ran GSD 3's on my Leon Cupra R, and fronts with motorway driving and spirited A road, lasted 20k miles. Increased grip, more predicible driving, better mpg (seriously!) - all that was missing was a pit crew and some bikini girls. Go for it!

what he said.

What is the load index of your quoted tyres? I've just got a set of 91Y GSD3s in 17 inch from mytyres, and IIRC these are called XL due to the greater load ability. My Impreza only actually needs 87.
FYI My previous set of GSD3s in 16 inch lasted 20k miles, but the wife did the lionesses share of the miles as it is the 'family' car.

oh hang on - blackcircles don't quote the load index do they? At least mytyres.co.uk DO actually tell you what you are buying... this is taken from their web-o-site

Goodyear EAGLE F1 GS-D3 195/45 R16 84V XL BSW

Goodyear EAGLE F1 GS-D3 195/45 R16 80V BSW

What load index do you need?

that's because Michelin tyres are way WAY harder, and consequently tend to be shite in the wet as a trade-off against long life.

right - I'm not comparing apples with apples, but it's close.

The old tyres (2003) are 205/50/16 87W and Made in Germany

The new tyres (2007) are 215/45/17 91Y and Made in China

note that the construction is different, but is this because the 91Y can carry a heavier load? Definately the sidewall in the 91Y has 2 plies, and the 87W has only 1.

Now for the E marks - Made in Germany

Made in China
