313bhp, isn't the Cayenne closer to 500?
The Turbo is.

These cars do my head in. I've had a few sitting a couple of inches off of my rear bumper because the owner thinks it's "fast" because of the figures, without taking into account the weight.
Exactly, 313bhp but about 2.5 times the weight of a hatchback with 200bhp
What does the weight matter once you are moving? Only when you have to turn - and then the power figures mean nothing then. That much torque will make this thing fly!

Not for me though, as it probably won't handle.

Fine for towing a heavy boat or race car trailer, but to dress it up with aero kits and bigger street tyres seems just a bit silly.

Of course we know the real buyers are looking for more credibility on the school run...

scratchchin 2230kg and 313bhp gives 140bhp/tonne. hehe
So basically it will be about as fast as my Punto, thanks for that VW
Looking at the model you've got and the power output, yes, you're right. You've got about 130bhp/tonne by my reckoning. Needless to say that the handling on your Punto will be better due to the lower weight, lower roll centre and lower centre of gravity. You might have some difficulty driving the Punto across rough terrain and through rivers though, I bet that really bothers you doesn't it? wink

Whoa whoa whoa Delilah. I think PH have got their wires crossed.

According to Worldcarfans and a lot of other sites, all VW have released is the picture of the R50, and a statement saying:

"The Touareg R50 is based on the current V10 TDI model but with a 'generous' power increase over the 230 kW (313 hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb/ft) torque."

They're going to release more details of the engine later on.

I'd wager that it'll be 400bhp+...

Well the standard spec Tuareg has more than the tuned Punto. Faster in a straight line. Carries more. Can tow stuff. Can be tuned easily for mega grunt. Etc. Etc.

Compare cars? Dangerous sport if you just look at figures.

Extremely bothered wink But then again how many of these Touregs are actually going to be taken off road?

I'd say a few more than Puntos.

Care to tow a boat?

Power/weight is all very well for getting off the line, but since it takes (very roughly) 100bhp to reach 100mph, for "available power to weight" at that speed you get...

213/2.230=95bhp/tonne for the Toerag
100/1.376=72bhp/tonne for a Golf GTI

This is theoretical - occupants would skew the result towards the Toerag, aero and tyres would drag back the other way, but you get the idea.

Of course, no one drives on the roads at such illegal speeds, but there you go smile

The Punto costs a fraction of the Toureg, handles better, has better mpg, can tow stuff aswell, can be tuned further smile

My car has 209 lb/ft aswell as it's 130bhp...

But lets get back on topic wink

biggrin Yeah, admittedly towing a boat would be a bit tricky with a Punto hehe

As for most other stuff, we've towed a caravan (yes, I admit it!), sailing dinghies and obviously my racing cars all over the place, and find an estate car does the job very well. Most estate cars have bigger boots than off roaders as well, which is useful for spares, tools etc. I should imagine though if you had a boat that needed reversing down a slipway (with most small dinghies and cats you just push them) 2WD could get a bit tricky and the Toureg would come into its own (finally!).

I would hazard a guess that the punto's lighter weight and thinner tyres would make it better than the turag with bling wheels off road too.
Wonder if you can buy it in yellow complete with a Tonker badge?

I think you'd struggle straddling tree trunks and on slippery mud though!!

Try a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT V8.....

420hp 400+ torques and with a simple remap and exhaust mods 450+.

Standard will do 0 - 60 in 5 flat all day and will pull nearly 1g round bend.

You are right about that ! The Cayenne is ferkin'ugly. I wouldn't have either one of them though. RR sport looks much better. Besides, who wants to take curves in an SUV?

God this place is really starting to get on my tits. The only reason I come back is for the articles and the classifieds.

Nothing but moaning. The news is a new Porsche - cue loads of "it's not a real drivers car because of XYZ'. The news is a bit of light-hearted vehicle-related trivia - cue "I thought this was a car site blah piss moan". A 4x4 is posted - cue "I hate SUVs - when are they ever going to go off road"...what a collection (with obvious exceptions) of wrs have started to hang around here.

Not everything is to everyone's taste. SO what! Don't post a comment if you hate it so much! When are powerful SUVs going to go off road? Probably never...but when do 80% of supercars ever do 160mph+??? Probably never. But what is your point? I have a 16Gb iPod Touch...but I have about 1Gb of songs on it. Apparently it does video and photos too. I bet most owners are unlikely to ever reach the capacity of the player. Should it not exist?

I swear, the tone of the posts here has become as 'anti-vehicle' as those on a Greenpeace message board. It's only a matter of time before the news tells us of an expensive, crazy-looking Lambo and a load of people post about how it costs too much and it's not pretty and what a waste when....oh wait...that's already happened, hasn't it? And with the GT2. And with....

You lot are turning into the kind of people who write to EVO and complain that the Panda 100HP should not be featured.

To the PH crew - I LOVE cars, boats, planes, bridges, huge buildings, expensive watches...hell, all manner of micro and macro-engineering does it for me. PLEASE keep posting anything you find about SUVs, supercars, shopping trolleys...I for one, love you. smile

For the rest of you - shouldn't you be on your rocking chairs complaining about the 'youth of today' and how nobody would dress like that in your day?

Flame on!

P~

oo, good rant. 6/10.

i think the problem is that there are a lot of new cynical cars around at the moment, and this just seems to be another one. its like they are made by robot designers who have a list of tick boxes, and this Toureg ticks a particular box.

its doesn't seem to of been built because someone in the design team had a passion to build it, but because they look at the meaner Q7 and Cayenne and want some of that pie as well.

i hate to say this but VAG and BMW are top of the stakes for building totally passionless cars at the moment. You only need to see the reaction that Fiat and Alfa get from the cars they have been launching in the last two years to see what a passionate car is.

Not tried this myself, but surely one of the many Audi Quattros, or a Scooby wagon would handle this? Still can't get my head around why you'd want an SUV over a decent estate... Ground clearance is about the only thing I can see that makes a big difference, but that means you'd have to take it off road regularly.

Why are you comparing it to a punto? Its a big luxury 4x4..

Who would go into a showroom looking a Touareg and think "Naah, I think ill go for a punto instead..."

Also, 130bhp puntos are not fast.
