God this place is really starting to get on my tits. The only reason I come back is for the articles and the classifieds.

Nothing but moaning. The news is a new Porsche - cue loads of "it's not a real drivers car because of XYZ'. The news is a bit of light-hearted vehicle-related trivia - cue "I thought this was a car site blah piss moan". A 4x4 is posted - cue "I hate SUVs - when are they ever going to go off road"...what a collection (with obvious exceptions) of wrs have started to hang around here.

Not everything is to everyone's taste. SO what! Don't post a comment if you hate it so much! When are powerful SUVs going to go off road? Probably never...but when do 80% of supercars ever do 160mph+??? Probably never. But what is your point? I have a 16Gb iPod Touch...but I have about 1Gb of songs on it. Apparently it does video and photos too. I bet most owners are unlikely to ever reach the capacity of the player. Should it not exist?

I swear, the tone of the posts here has become as 'anti-vehicle' as those on a Greenpeace message board. It's only a matter of time before the news tells us of an expensive, crazy-looking Lambo and a load of people post about how it costs too much and it's not pretty and what a waste when....oh wait...that's already happened, hasn't it? And with the GT2. And with....

You lot are turning into the kind of people who write to EVO and complain that the Panda 100HP should not be featured.

To the PH crew - I LOVE cars, boats, planes, bridges, huge buildings, expensive watches...hell, all manner of micro and macro-engineering does it for me. PLEASE keep posting anything you find about SUVs, supercars, shopping trolleys...I for one, love you. smile

For the rest of you - shouldn't you be on your rocking chairs complaining about the 'youth of today' and how nobody would dress like that in your day?

Flame on!

P~
Do it for the kids. Nobody would dress like that in my day.

I should imagine though if you had a boat that needed reversing down a slipway (with most small dinghies and cats you just push them) 2WD could get a bit tricky and the Toureg would come into its own (finally!).
Not tried this myself, but surely one of the many Audi Quattros, or a Scooby wagon would handle this? Still can't get my head around why you'd want an SUV over a decent estate... Ground clearance is about the only thing I can see that makes a big difference, but that means you'd have to take it off road regularly.
Good point, I didn't think of that.

Regarding Phantom's post - many of my comments were tongue in cheek, and I apologise if they cause offence, but one thing I will say is that, like you and others, I am a true petrolhead. I get as excited about driving or reading about Smarts and Fiat 500s as I do about Elises, Exiges or Ferraris and Porsches. I just take no interest in off roaders at all, and do admit to getting a bit annoyed when people buy them for road use - it's just a target for Greenpeace et al to attack the rest of us. The odd one is cool (I always smile when I see a Hummer for instance), but now they're everywhere, and to be honest even if my favourite car (Mclaren F1) was all over the streets driven by people who aren't interested in high speed driving I would be against that too. Things are fun in moderation, but you can have too much of anything. Greenpeace wouldn't be bothered about the 50 odd Macca F1s on the road, or the thousand or so F40s around the world, but one of the main reasons we're all being attacked so much as motorists is that off roaders have become very plentiful indeed, and as a petrolhead I find that an embaressment. Of course, I still smile if I see an off roader plastered in mud with its V8 humming away, or driven by a guy in wellies and a funny hat (great!); but seeing 30 or 40 every day driven by men in suits is just a real shame to be honest.

Why are you comparing it to a punto? Its a big luxury 4x4..

Who would go into a showroom looking a Touareg and think "Naah, I think ill go for a punto instead..."

Also, 130bhp puntos are not fast.
I was just saying it's almost the same power to weight ratio, someone else made the comparison between them as cars.

And they aren't fast in the grand scheme of things but the torque makes it pretty quick while moving smile

But like i said lets get back on topic

Probably the best idea smile We all know each other's opinions on this matter I guess.

The Punto comparision was an interesting one though smile Oh, and I miscalculated your power to weight - I thought you had 124bhp. You've got nearly 130, so you do actually have the same power to weight as the Toureg - about 140.

Right - back on topic! smile

Ditto - and I'd just like to add I was on the Isle of Wight last weekend and took the GT3 for 1st time - If I was to ever move back to the Island I would buy a 4X4 - unless they were to do something about the roads - they are appauling - my folks have got an R reg Audi A4 avant - it's only done 100k and it's knackered compared to a friend who has an older one that's done twice the milage on the mainland...

Try a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT V8.....

420hp 400+ torques and with a simple remap and exhaust mods 450+.

Standard will do 0 - 60 in 5 flat all day and will pull nearly 1g round bend.
Pulling near 1g != decent handling though.

I'd not be so quick to write this thing off...

After all, VW are on a roll at the moment - both aesthetically and dynamically. OK, so their cars aren't pretty, but they're pretty handsome - especially in 'R' guise.

Dynamically they're doing well - both the Golf and Passat being miles ahead of previous incarnations, plus it's pretty well accepted that the Cayenne platform it's based on is pretty good.

Would I have one?

Erm, well if I had to have a 4x4, I'd have a Touareg, but not this one - it's a bit silly and those wheels are just ripe for kerbing.

Nope, my money's on another one of the R cars... wink

I know that was a rant and trust me I am going to seek help, but I just adore engineering. I love that we ('man') can create something like the Cayenne Turbo, or the cell-processor, or that bridge in France, or a machine that can get to Mars, or another machine that can keep people alive after an accident.

If humans ever stop pushing the envelope, then we really will be fecked. Look at the progress in terms of cars. The fact that hydrogen cars exist. The fact that electric cars exist. We are an amazing race and we owe it to ourselves to never stifle the progress we make. If in selling the tens-of-thousands of Towrags they do, they are able to greater fund research into a truly next-gen powertrain, then surely that is not a bad thing?

I know it's about profit and so on and so forth, but pretty please people - it's hard enough to justify my Golf GTI in this massive, relentless, media-driven attack on the car, without adding to the negativity ourselves.

Can't we all just get along? Somebody think of the children!!! PRAISE THE JEBUS!!!!

313bhp, isn't the Cayenne closer to 500?
Yeh it is (well, the current Cayenne Turbo has 500bhp, and the Turbo S had slightly more).

So, i'm not quite sure where they are going with this? I think that even the GTS version of the Cayenne has more power?

Plus, I think that, being a Porsche, the Cayenne will always be the better drive between the two...

Yes, I agree completely from that point of view yes Porsche have proved that making the Cayenne has funded their sports cars. In the future Porsche making a green car with alternative fuel will probably fund new GT3s and GT2s. The Cayenne hasn't affected the Porsche brand or values, and I doubt an alternative fuel car will either. I support engineering and advancement 100%.

I still must say though that a 4x4 being used soley on the road is like a city boy buying a Ferrari to cruise around London in. Each to their own (of course! it's only fair people can buy what they want), but neither are anything at all to do with being a petrolhead, and to be quite honest it is a glowing carrot for the green brigade's rantings. The emissions bands on tax and congestion charge were probably coming anyway, but the spread of 4x4s for everyday use in towns hasn't helped at all; much like the motorway speed limit was coming anyway in the 60s, and I love the AC Cobra to bits, but if some idiot hadn't done 186mph up the M1 in one we'd have been better off for a few more years, and may even have a higher limit today. Let's enjoy our toys, but not get too silly and greedy and ruin it for everyone else. The engineering is impressive, but unless it's used it's like Concorde doing Southampton to Jersey flights on Saturday mornings. smile Just my thoughts.

you want the Q7 V12 TDi 500bhp and 1000Nm, and it is damn quick, and nearly double the economy of a cayenne, not that thats hard

0-60 in 5.5s isnt bad for a 2.5ton oilburner!

i personally think that it looks crap, i mean what the point of an "on-roader". why not just get a nice quick CAR.

I'm begging VW to put that engine into a Golf or even better the Iroc (Scirocco) if it would fit?!

Am I the only one?
