Interesting this, a lot of car manufactures are moving away from the conventional key in the barrel method. Aston Martin for one, an ECU: Emotion Control Unit. Soon the extras list will include: 'Traditional Key' or something like that.

What if you are travelling and your phone/key/satnav/mp3 player runs out of batteries?

Again, you use the key.

Have a look at these photos it looks like Apple coverflow in centre of dash display

Isnt that patented by Apple?

I heard Apple were developing in car systems for a European manufacturer - is it Audi?

http://cars.uk.msn.com/Photo_Gallery/Popup_page.as...

Also photo 13 appears to show a coverflow type interface on the phone / key unit?

That's bloody enormous.
I'd want more screen and less bezel. I'm assuming it's a slider.
Yuck. As an iphone user, that's no iphone.

As for it's features, I already have my iphone controlling most of my life. Nothing new, move on, yawn.

How will the car know it is being stolen to take the picture; wouldn't that be a good time for the immobiliser to do something? rolleyes.
Simple!!!

The same way as us humans are sometimes made aware of a car being stolen/broken into. Trigger of the car alarm, through unlawful or unconventional entry. (Window break [cabin air disturbance], or door opening [interior light voltage drop] with alarm still armed).

The immobilser will still be active, and the photo idea is probably designed to take a photo of the lowlife breaking into your car, as opposed to any threat of it actually being stolen.

Cool! How do you turn on the heating without starting the engine (which is illegal without a person in the driver's seat in many countries)?
Webasto (or similar) burner with pump. They usually heat the rad water as well and pump it through the jacket. Hardly the latest innovation, but well worth having.

That is the SEX. I love it. The fact that it photographs people trying to steal your car? Genius!
Trying to keep up with car thieves is a difficult business, and I think this is really a step forward.
I daresay that fully comprehensive insurance policies will adapt to cover it, bearing in mind it is in effect a key, and keys are covered on most policies, even TPFT
Steal the car with a balaclava on? rolleyes

Just another gimmick.
Indeed. We've got loads of excellent photos of our recent burglars. The resolution is so good you can see the individual weave of their hooded tops. Added to that is that getting caught is not a deterant in this country any longer, it is practically an irrelevance.

Loss of phone is also going to be an issue.

The only solution to car theft is an encrypted PIN which if not entered, locks the thief in, releases a toxic gas and once deceased, opens the door, tilts the carcass onto the street and closes the door after.

Guaranteed to see off the wife ....she'd never remember the code, and by the time she'd located the scrap of paper it was written on, at the bottom of her handbag (which, by the way, is big enough for the entire England rugby squad), she'd have long ago been gassed and deposited on the street.

Note to self: Get new anti-theft system installed.....as recomended by Horse_Apple.....

You're right, it could put divorce lawyers on the streets. That would be awful. wink

Besides, if you've an Italian wife, like I have, then it's more likely that I'll be climbing in one day to find someone has changed the code without telling me. biggrin

yes exactly.

Waited for a year for Audi to develop a cradle for my phone - even then it doesn't sit right.

Am assuming this will come with "gubbins" in stock!
