My Dad was in the trade therefore used to change his car every year or so.

Before and after having me he had the following, amongst others.

Mk1 Escort Mexico
Mk1 Escort Mexico Rally car
Mk1 Lotus Cortina
Capri 2.8i
Jaguar XJS V12
Triumph TR6 (fully restored)
Several BMW's
Mercedes 280SL
And his was within a bee's wing of buying a Sapphire Cosworth before the insurance sky-rocketed.

He has a '02 Renault Megane 1.4 now.... frown

Dads coolest car? nothing much, because we were poor. He did have a MK1 Capri 1600GT in bronze with a matt black bonnet, and a Fiat 124 twin cam though, they were good.

Mum though, she has had loads:

72 Corvette Stingray convertible, big block, manual.
76 Corvette Stingray Coupe, 350 auto.
Citroen Maserati SM (purchased from Jeremy Thorpe, the Liberal leader).
Bentley S3.
RR Shadow I.

My dad's only managed to get the following cars of interest past my Mum in the '80s, everything else since has been boring Euroboxes:

Fiat 131 Mirafiori. Everyone thought it was a BMW.

Vauxhall Cavalier SRI, in red (yes, I know this one is a toy). Although it was fast, he hated it. Later exploded all over John Delaney Motors during a routine service after something unexpectedly caught fire.

Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth. He didn't have it long though.

Vauxhall Chevette HS. I remember it being phenomenally noisy, and occasionally on the motorway, if my Mum and Dad wanted to talk, they'd have to pull over.

And his coolest car, from before I was born:

And his turned out to be the Lotus/Jensen 900-series engine test mule, with an experimental lump squeezed under the bonnet. Changing spark plugs was an engine-out job, thanks to the slant of the block and the returning edge of the bonnet.

I've some cracking memories of my Dad hooning about in his GTV just like the one below. It had a tan velour interior which I can still see - It was a cracking car that made all the right noises (in the mind of a youngster in the back anyway!).

I've nearly bought one of these babys twice now....the best one was a special edition model which was I guess the "AMG / M-Power" version of an original GTV6 done by a company called Chapparal who took new GTVs and spent £15000(!!!) on upgrades (I saw the original invoices!): It came with cream leather/deep pile carpets/full colour coding of panels/engine tweaks (high lift cams etc producing 210bhp). It was so very nearly mine but we couldn't agree on a price. Isn't it interesting though how what your Dad drove tempered your car dreams when you got older - I find myself strangely drawn to the cars of my youth and especially ones my dad had...

The pic below is an actual Chapparal car that sold recently for £1850 at Auction (Best Bargain Hatch thread contender?)

Not sure what the coolest would be but I like the Chevy Suburban with lights on the roof in black with blacked out windows. Was a monster of a car/truck 5.7 V8 Loved getting dropped at school in the thing on Saturdays.

Also had three 3 x Sierra Cosworths, 1 x Escort Cosworths, and in his youth a ford escort Mexico.

Now has SL55 AMG.

the coolest car's my Dad had was before i was born, the brands hatch pace car in the early 80's, their capri smile his race cars at the time were a talbot lotus sunbeam and a ren 5, stopped racing just before I and the 5 turbo's came in, and before that he had a sd1 vitesse

after that his coolest cars were probably his ren 21 turbo, tuned by bbr racing i think it was, tinted windows, leather, lowered and shifted some! also he had a tweeked rover 620 ti and then went onto his bm 750.

now hes boring, is a driving instructor, drives nothing like he used to (way too slow and grandad like now) and drives a bm 116 frown

My dad had a series of MGBs/Midgets company cars that he wangled as some sort of tax dodge, he bought the last one when they stopped making them but got rid of it as his new company wanted him to have something newer so he replaced it with a white RS turbohehe That went when he changed jobs again and was replaced with an E30 316frown

In the 70's my mother went from

Austin 1100 > Jaguar E-Type > Jensen Interceptor Series III > Maserati Merak > Ex Newport Fire Service Vauxhall Viva.

I cling to the glory years, to be honest.
