Since the end of the cold war there is very little demand or need for high speed jets, given the future warfare is likely to be low tech insurgency like the taliban air superiority is less important against a distributed guerilla force as vietnam proved. Apaches are more use than jets as you are more likely to need close air support than strategic fighter capability.
Were that were true. China, for all the four-wheel crap they're turning out--not to mention the lead-coated toys they're trying to poison American kids with--is developing a top-rank military. They've demonstrated an ability to punch a 4-meter wide satellite (thier own) out of the sky, have silent submarines that whale-lovers are preventing the U.S. from using advanced sonar from finding; they've been conducting "cyberprobes" of U.S. (and whose else's?) military computer systems, etc., etc. The ChiComs aren't developing that stuff just for kicks.

And before you say anything about, well, they just want to be able to match the U.S.'s military's abilities, no, they want better than the U.S. (That's the point of weapons). And I don't care how anti-American anyone on the right side of the pond may be, who'd you rather have watching your six, Uncle Sam...or Uncle Mao? sonar

Oh, yeah. Then there's that ex-KGB guy Putin who's pulling some dusty old toys out of the closet...

Indeed competion for oil and other resouces is only going to intensify in the future, when resources become scarce, which they inevitably will due to the ballooning population (planet can only support so many humans) conflict an tensions will increase around the world

Well, I'm not quite so Mathusian as that, as resources have a way of being replaced or expanded or whatever (e.g., oil in western Canada that was once considered inaccessible is now creating boomtown conditions in certain cities).

And eventually, someone will figure out cold fusion or some other technology that hasn't even been imagined yet. About 1900, the director of the U.S. Patent Office recommended that his agency be closed down because everything worth inventing already had been invented. On the other hand, one French futurist imagined radium fireplaces. Ah, yes, cozy up to the radiation, my dear. You'll know you're done when the skin falls off your back.

Anyway, much of Europe has a negative population growth, at least among its native population...

I am, however, concerned about the military aspirations of China's autocratic government, not to mention an economy that they're using as a weapon too, and that the West is all too ready let itself be sucked in...
