Great article. Sums up everything that made the car so good.

I did 75,000 miles in my 2004 WRX PPP, and with the exception of a gearbox bearing failure early on, it didnt miss a beat.
I agree it wasnt pretty, and the interior appearance was well below what was expected of a car at this price point. None of this mattered when blasting along a familiar road - the performance was awesome.

It was the best car I've ever owned, reading this article reminded me how much I miss it!

It was watching Colin blast past that made me want one. It took a while, but I love the one I've got now.

nice article. I still consider my V5 Impreza as one of the best cars I've owned.

I've enjoyed every minute of owning my 02 Bugeye. The servicing hasn't been too painful either really, it's actually enjoyable getting a new turbo here and a clutch there, a smattering of new brakes, all add to reviving the drive of the already fantastic car! I'm considering selling mine in the New Year and am struggling to find a replacement. An S4 offers the perfomance and 4WD but it's heavy and do I really need a V8? Can't really find a car to match it performance/handling wise except the Evo which is a bit to sharp/choppy for me now I'm getting older! The Impreza interiors are fine from my version onwards, totally robust and functional, not ugly either. V good seats, fantastic aircon, strong heater, heated wing mirrors - what more do you need on a rally car please?! Help me choose a new car somebody as I'm going out of my box. £20k to play with. Actually want to pretend to sell the Impreza in front of my wife and then just keep it hidden away in storage and go and visit him secretly at weekends like some sort of illicit affair. See what impreza ownership does to a man? I used to be so normal. Don't buy one, you'll never settle for anything less capable for the rest of your life.

I was about to buy my first Impreza, but I've got the current fuel prices nagging at me in the back of my head. 40 miles a day could get expensive, but I'm sure when I come back from the rally in Wales I'll go and buy one!
I'd like a classic, but finding a decent one with air con is proving to be problematic.

This is the 03 WRX wagon I'm thinking of getting:

I think it may have been lowered...

A friend in the trader is selling it, but not had the chance to go and have a look yet...

Given that you feel the Evo's too choppy (i agree) and that the S4 is too heavy (i agree to that too) and you have £20k to spend there's only one thing for it....a new WRX. I know there's been lots of people talking it down but it's gotta be on your list - if you have one. Enjoy the search.

They are pretty addictive. I got my first over 7 years ago and have never looked back. It's a shame that the reputation has been ruined somewhat by the ever-more-affordable jap imports killing the resale value of uk models. Still, great cars and I'm loving my 2006 STi.

Sadly this will be my last, until Subaru get their fingers out and sort the 2008 model out (I really hate it).

Superb cars though, and very reliable.

for 20k I'd entertain something from Litchfield, JDM Civic Type R, I would be interested to try their new Impreza's aswell, for the sake of research biggrin

Not too in your face for me, but these days, as you say, they are a bit of a Clitoris car.

Mine is pretty much identical... Lovely motor, though mine's the 01. Very good value for money at the moment.

I managed to find a V plate wagon off here 1 owner from new with 38500 on the clock with leather and air for £4,800.

They do pop up you just have to be patient and wait but when yo udo finally take the plunge the wait is well worth it

I'm still holding my judgement on it... in the flesh it isn't half as bad as the pictures, and as said before the looks were never the selling point of the car.

Great article and I've only just collected my 2001 WRX with some nice Prodrive extras.

I soooo love it! it's taken 10 years to get into one, previous attempts just failed, but in the meantime i've owned the following... working backwards

2006 VW MK5 Golf GTI
2003 Porsche Boxster S
2003 BMW 320D
2003 Honda Civic Type R
2002 Honda S2000
2000 Honda Integra Type R DC2

Yet in all the time I've lusted after a flat 4 Jap rally motor ;0) it just never worked out!!!

But at long lost i have the motor and all for only 8.5K! 30000 miles on the clock, dark blue with Gold rims, STI spoilers/front fogs - Prodrive brakes, WR suspension, WR exhaust and a mod free engine. I bloody love it! It's been a few years since i last took the long route home.....

Happy days and now i have the right motor to fit my 555 plate on :0))))
