The Golfs get thrashed to death because they are woefully underpowered.

Oh Please - Pull your pants up and start talking from your mouth.

If your a true VW fan, you treat your cars with respect, we're not all boy racers, wanting you race around town with the music pumping trying to impress the girls thinking we're the dogs balls in your french heap.... If you want a car that'll keep up with most around a circuit or the country lanes, then a Golf is the Future.. Trust me, I've owned many of them. There are lots of cars out there which would struggle to keep up with these classics on any bends.. But if you want to try with your Prehistoric Torsion Bar than please feel free to bring it on..... SEE YA!!!!! Or should that be eat my dust....

so that's what I'm doing wrong - I've owned my mk1 for 12 years hehe

The second issue is that you have to have driven one of these cars from the era that they came from to appreciate them. To drive them now, you just don't get it. In their day they were fast.

Today, a boggo BMW diesel will maul one of these classics.
disagree; it's light and agile; exactly the opposite of most modern cars; on a twisty the mk1 does maul most other vehicles.

Once you drive an unspoiled one for a few miles, even today, even in the SE of the UK, you 'get' it.

My underpowered E46 rep barge goes around corners better than a GTI

My birds old Ford Ka goes around corners better than a GTI

Infact, nearly everycar since 95' goes around corners better than a GTI

but you are proving my point.

things move on. comparing more modern cars against old GTIs is a pointless exercise.

LOL - No not at all, I'm just about to finish work, and to get into my VW which I know will get me home, unlike you....

Hope you've got the car recover telephone number in your mobile because you'll need it when the French washing machine engine packs up in your motor.. Mind you, your probably on first name terms now with the recover guys by now, well come off, they do pick you up enough times a year. hahaha

Anyway - Must hash....

OH PS - Mind that cow sh1t in the field when you roll the car on the way home thinking your driving a golf, we wouldn't want that lovely rust work dirtying now would..

I've owned my 16v for nearly 15 years wink

As much as I love it, and shes stored all year round out of the weather after a fairly expensive rebuild, but i don't get all rose tinted with the performance nowadays. Its fast, its capable, but my previous daily (MGTF 115) would have it on the first corner.

Strictly speaking though thats not fair as the TF is mid engined, and behaves really quite nicely, not that anyone on PH would ever tell you that wink

But even my daily previous to that, a Fiat Bravo, was again better screwed together than the Golf and better engine than the Golf, etc.

You have to respect them all for their place in history.

Can't decide whether to take the Golf to Switzerland next year (its first time out of the country), or take the Mustang again.

Well...

I have sold my R5 after 1000's of miles trouble free motoring, I think the reverse light switch failed once and the heater motor packed in, ok and a wire broke off the rear light cluster iirc.

Like I say I sold the car and moved on to better things, one day if you can afford to, you might be able to do that too.

And I won't roll my car on the way home either because I'm already at home because I don't have to go to work that much.

Hope you don't get any hassle by a Clio DCi 100 or suchlike on the way home, how embarrassing that would be.

Well one would bl00dy well hope that there had been some advances in suspension design between 1984 and 1995! But to claim "nearly everycar [sic] since 95' [sic] goes around corners better is just puerile exaggeration. The E46 3-series and the Ka are renowned for good handling, so it's not exactly like you are claiming the Mk2 GTI gets mauled by dross now are you.

The Mk2 GTI remains one of the best-handling FWD cars made - yes personally I find my Z1 handles better than my old 16v did but then it's RWD and it pioneered BMW's sophisticated z-axle design so that's no great surprise, but my FWD 156 GTA doesn't outhandle the GTI in my view - it might corner much flatter and have more grip, but ultimately it's not as good or fun.

The Golf is from a different age and you cant compare it to modern cars, Ive had 1.6, 1.8 Mk1, 1.8Mk2 8v and BB 16valve, corrado and now a golf VR6 High line, all of which have been and are great in their own ways and good in their day but a good modern TDi would whip a 16valve Mk 2 16valve today, a new TDi Gti 170bhp can outrun a Mk3 VR6 to 100MPH, you have to remember the Mk1 GTi was up against Mk2 Escorts, vauxhall vivas, capris etc etc
If you put a Mk2 escort against a Focus what do you think is going to come out on top in every area( Apart from the fun factor )

But I did go french for a while with a couple of Pug's 205's 1.6 & 1.9 both of which were much better drivers cars than any golf ive owned but reliable as the day is long and both Pug's seemed to be made of tin foil and bluetack but you forgave it because they were so much fun, but the golf still shines through for me because they just keep on going and are well made, which for me makes the golf king of the hatchbacks.......

I thought my Golf GTI handled quite well actually... OK I've never driven a 205 to compare, but I do own an Integra Type-R, which is pretty much the best handling FWD motor out there, so I think I at least can offer the opinion that the Golf wasnt that bad... cornering speeds werent the highest in the world, but were pretty good (well what do you expect from 14" wheels shod with 185 tyres), and mine wasnt even particularly mint. Great fun, good weight to the steering, plenty of feel, quite a bit of body roll, but oh so predictable and playful. A modern one will corner faster for sure, but wont be as much fun, simple as.

I cant believe how much flak these cars are getting really, they are good little cars.... but I have to say, they arent THAT reliable!

Bought my first Golf GTI (Mk2 8 valve) almost 15 years ago. Absolutely loved it. Great car to drive and own and still the car I look back on most fondly.

However, I needed a runabout a few years back so bought myself another. What a mistake! Time had moved on and it was not the car I remembered, although the soggy shocks and smoking engine didn't help its case.

I owned 2 Mk 2 GTIs, the 1st of which I bought with 80K on the clock & sold with just over 200k, lost a whole 200 quid in depreciation in the process making it just about the cheapest bit of motoring I've ever experienced. The 2nd was a stop-gap car I ran for 4 months while my 3rd Golf 2 was being repaired (again). I sold that at profit. So, the 3rd Golf 2 then - a G0 Ralleye. Owned for 2 years & off the road for about 7 months of that time due to being a mechanical piece of dog's mess. Tip, if you want a G60 Golf, replace the radiator with the much bigger1 out of Passat & get yourself a supply of gearboxes -you'll need 'em. As for what could replace a Golf 2, take a look at the piccie in my profile & you'll see. & yes, there was more space inside the GTIs but not in thr G60.

My daily is a mk2 golf, I have owned cars that handle better & stop better & more practical. But its an old car. Which is why I fitted better brakes, suspension, leather & 200 turbo'd horses....

Now its the perfect everyday runabout until I can afford a new BMW M5.......

Had my mk2 8v GTI for over 7 years now, unfortunately relegated to runaround status as the Corrado is my current pride and joy, but...the golf still makes me grin, and feelds very solid. Also (and this may be down the length of time I've had it) it feels very safe interms of predictability and progressive breakaway when on the edge..as I think someone else said you can have fun at much lower speeds..

In terms of real comparison, a modern hot hatch would eat it for breakfast in terms comfort, speed, handling etc (my GTI is 21 years old now..)....but who cares?- its sounds great and I can have lots of fun at legal speeds (plus its a practical daily hack- I currently do 600 miles a week in it..) smile
