And neither are your post contributionsVW Golf fanatics are like god bothers'. They just wont be told any different regardless of the facts put in front of them
And it's "botherers". No need for the apostrophe, and just the one extra 'er'. You can use the apostrophe in "won't", if you like.
When you find some facts, post them up like a good boy. I thought this spot was all about personal opinion. impo, of course.
The mark 1 set the whole ball rolling, the original 1.6 was fast, tight, handled extremely well and was playfull in the purist of ways.
The 1.8 then progressed things to the next level by adding a bit more "umph" although its is accepted it made the car a little heavier up front so a tiny bit of the handling was the price paid.
At the time the mk 1 rolled off the production line their was nothing which came close to offering the package that the mk1 had, although their were the odd car with a similar goal (alfa 1.5 springs to mind). The mk1 was also pretty succesful in the motorsport arena to boot.
When the pug came along it was built to compete with the mk1 so it was based on the mk1 and no doubt they took afew golfs apart in the process. Its success is also down to the golf! Although it was not as well built and imho was a cruder version but thats mo.
To round it off the mk1 campaign became the icon of the generation and i believe quite rightly so.
I then think the mk2 got a little bit too main stream for me and as for the mk3!! After the mk1, the golf lost an element of what the car was originally about. they became alittle bigger, heavier and vw moved space and comfort up the pecking order but did mostly manage to retain the original concept.
However all the way along the golfs many shapes and styles vw would throw something alittle more bionic into the mix to ensure people never forgot its roots.
The other thing to consider apart from being the first, is which others are still evolving now! But rest assured although the cars are outdated by todays standards the mk1 will be in touch with many of the newer higher powered sports cars, and the more bends the better!

I thought the 1.6 (1982) and 1.8 (1983 on) 8v engines were essentially the same; VW only increased the stroke to increase the torque, but the componants were almost all identical, and so was the weight.Edited by Orangecurry on Monday 17th December 10:05

Is that so? The 1.6 is a revver, the 1.8 more a torque-focussed engine.
I still see alot of 205 GTi's running around over here. Probably the lived . . .
don't forget the Gov thoughtfully cover our roads in salt every winter, so as to prevent the UK drivers learning how to control their cars. It also means the old french/italian cars have no change of longevity. You continentals are so lucky.I still see alot of 205 GTi's running around over here. Probably the lived . . .
Just read that somebody thinks that not all GTI owners thrash their cars - maybe not, but I thrashed mine. The guy I bought it off (with 80k on the clock) had thrashed it, I thrashed for another 120k & sold it as a going concern (without resorting to clocking it) & all Ican say is that they take the punishment very well. Tried the same with the G60 I replaced my GTI with & killed it. Several times.
i see lots more xr3i`s and rs turbos on ebay and autotrader than i can find mk2 gti`s and also see as many on the roads, so dont know where that part came from. and yes i have also driven a couple of these gti`s when i was thinking of getting one and maybe they were good when new, but the apparently mint examples i drove were the rattliest pieces of rubbish i have ever driven. interior is the worst of any car ive ever been in. and yes its true everyone in this conversation will hate me because golf enthusiasts are like arsenal supporters they will not be told anything else, the facts are lying, and no i will not listen to you, i know best because i love golfs and i am a goooooner. me me me, i know better , i know better ,i know better! leave the old golfs to die. if its true there are more than xr3i`s (and i doubt it)its because people dont know when a cars dead and still want to restore it spending thousands of pounds on a £50 rustbucket. just like the old camper van. rubbish should go in the bin, stop littering and keep britain tidy.

You lucky man if you've never sat in a car with a worse interior than a Mk2 Golf. Assuming you mean in terms of design, space and quality, then I can think of hundreds, especially among contemporaries like the 205 GTi, Astra GTE or XR3i, that have infinitely nastier interiors. Which is not to say I can't also think of better ones - contemporary BMWs and Mercs. Comparing a design dating back to 1984 with a current design is like an old Amstrad PC with an iMac. Pointless and ridiculous. Edited by vino 187 on Tuesday 18th December 15:48
On the Gooner comment, you appear to be a bit keen on Fords, so are probably not so unbiased in this conversation either.
no as i drive a focus st. but when i went to look at golfs i was very disappointed and bought a 1.8 xr2i which had a much better interior and exterior and although needed a water pump and lowering was a much better drive. and the xr3i which i was never keen on also had a better interior, in fact i even preferred the dash of the pug 205 too, i have been in some shit old cars and only the dash and seats in the golf stand out as being particularly horrible(including a datsun cherry with brown upholstery). and yes i have owned a golf vr6 so not just fords have had allsorts, but never been disappointed by a ford like i have french, jap and german.

You must live in Essex.
no i dont live in essex. i take it that you didnt have anything constructive to say about my comments except the possibility of where i live? did you ever find that issue of evo with the golf in the top 10? no? neither did anyone else. funny that.I did find the Golf GTI (and VR6) in the EVO top tens, but I thought the moment had passed.
EVO 013
p74 Paul Ripley
p74 Derek Bell (OK that's a Beetle )
p75 Nick Mason
p75 Brian Laban
need I go on?
I think if you stay on PH for any length of time, you'll find that balance is quite important.

The dash of the 205 wasn't bad-looking but it was flimsier than something knocked together on Blue Peter from old Cornflakes boxes and sellotape. I suspect it is easy not to be disappointed by a Ford since the expectations start off fairly low for anything that pre-dates the first Focus (in itself a great car but hardly one possessed of an attractive interior), various Cosworths honourably excepted.
I'm a big fan of the mk2 Golf interior. Whilst basic and dark, it has an inherent feeling of solidity and quality that seems to transcend time, much like the Porsche 993 interior.
On the face of it, it may look a bit old fashioned, but look closer and you will start to appreciate its other qualities.

my only issue with golf gti's when i was 19 was that 1 they cost to much and 2 they were far to slow
for the insurance, astra gte 16v was a much better bet faster more economical less drab inside might not be so good around bends but it did for me with better shocks never had a golf tailgaiting me around any bends probably due to the fact they were still half hour behind

I have to say my 1990 small bumper GTI 8v was the best car I have owned. I admit it was never as sharp as a 205 gti but you could give it the berries and you knew it wasn't going to bite you on the arse! I enjoyed its fruity bumble from the exhaust and excellent build quality. It felt like it would go on forever until some tw@t crashed into it!
