"I'm taking the 430 out next week again for a few days just to recheck my opinion. And then the Ford GT back to back. Should be a good comparison test."

You'll find the GT makes the 430 seem slow (OK, so slow is a bit of an exageration...) but the 430 makes the GT feel crude, even a little old. You can take extraordinary liberties with the 430 - find a bend with a clear sight line stick it in Sport and over cook it. Do that a few times to get a feel for it then stick it in Race and over cook it even more. Then swallow hard, put P1's insurance excess out of your mind and switch it all off. Before you know it you'll be drifting like a daemon. Try that in the GT and you'll have to explain to P1 why they've got to come and collect their car from a field! And that's assuming you haven't already winged something coming the other way, it's so wide. But then again, take the GT on the motorway and feel that mountain of power. For some that will be the clincher. Personally I'd take an extraordinary cornering ability in exchange for some extra grunt. After all, even the slowest of the supercars are suicidally fast anyway.

I took an Arnage out to do wedding duties for a friend and you're right it is, in a strange way, quite good fun. In fact I think the fun comes from its pomposity. And it's a real kind of party car to take your friends around in. Also the way it accelerates comes as quite a shock. You don't expect a big 'ol tank like that to pull the way it does. My disappointment came from the fact that it wasn't as cosseting as I'd expected. Wasn't as luxurious, didn't quite ride as if on glass, wasn't quite as cavernous on the inside considering its size on the outside. I think my problem comes from the fact that, even by P1's standards, the Arnage is an expensive car, top end in fact, and as such I expected it to be in another league in all these areas.

Enjoy your drive and make sure those tires are a few mill smoother when you give the cars back!

Unfortunately and ironically got a call Friday saying the 430 is unavailable due to gearbox problems and leaking manifold - that needs parts out of the country etc!! And it's under three months old.

So I guess that shows us that the idea of P1 is not that bad - I'd be gutted if I'd spent that much on such a fragile monster, whereas I can just swap for something else instead.....and secondly, that fate is keeping me from liking the Ferraris. I'll do my best to have fun in the (reliable) Ford GT!!

Snap! The 430 died on me the morning I was due to drive to Italy in it! A friend was coming along for the ride and had taken a week off work for the experience so you can imagine how he felt. And just picture the look on my face as I'm sitting on an Easy Jet with my knees under my chin on the way to Bergamo. Still, as you say, at least I wasn't the one picking up the repair bill.

Sorry to hear about that, it's such a let down when that happens (though thankfully it doesn't happen that often).

Well the Ford GT was great - Goodyears needed to be warmed up but managed to get into a groove after not too many miles. Terrific engine - good torque throughout but then the power takes over at the very top end. No Ferrari squealing - just good solid V8 stonk. No discernable lag. Handling very balanced though you can feel the back nudging you round on slower corners. Fun.

Unfortunately much of my drive was at night on damp East Sussex roads which are really not much more than country lanes, where the width, LHD and truly hopeless lights made it a bit hair-raising, more so for the passenger!! And have many head dents from silly doors though!! No space at all for anything (even my underwear) which is a real shame because it deserves a good thrash across the continent.

P1 told me all four Ferraris are in the shop for repairs at the moment as well of course as the Lambo's. The Bentley Speed and F GT that I drove this week of course completely solid and reliable. Nice paint too.

The fleet is worth £6million and every year it depreciates 20 to 25%. That’s between 1.2 and £1.5million a year.

Ouch, that's harsh when you put it into real numbers.
