RIP Paul Smith of Safe Speed

Founder of campaign group Safe Speed has passed away

Sad news reached our offices this afternoon that Paul Smith, founder of campaign group SafeSpeed, passed away last night.

Everyone in the world of motoring knew of Paul and his tireless work campaigning for road safety through ways other than putting a speed camera on every street corner.

His organisation may not have been the largest but Paul had one of the loudest voices and he was still campaigning only last week.

PistonHeads members will be familiar with Paul's work and I'm sure you will join us in sending our condolences to his family at this difficult time.

My condolences to his family, he fought tirelessly for the rights of the driver in the face of our ridiculous government...

A real loss...

RIP Indeed. He has done such a lot in the campaign against Greed Cameras over the years. I've still got some SafeSoeed window stickers in my car!

This is very sad news, RIP Paul.

I sincerely hope that his work is carried on, and that Safespeed keeps going from strength to strength.

Flip, what a shame. Seemed a good chap from the articles I read, written by him.

All the best to the Smith family.

Very sad to die at that age. It was only last week I was listening to him on Radio 5.

My heart-felt condolences go out to his family.

In his own quiet way he was a great man, fighting for something he felt passionate about -- he didn't just moan on a forum like I do, he went out there and did stuff. He will be sorely missed.

Hell that's sad news. A true campaigner who worked tirelessly for what he believed in, for little money. Thanks for all the valuable work you've done Paul. RIP.

I hope everyone realises what this means - Paul was the ONLY outspoken voice against our insidious oppressors and afaic they killed him.

You have to say this is an absolute disaster for PH.

I am stunned.

RIP Paul, you will be in our thoughts.

My sympathy to Mr Smith's family at this sad time. We, as driving enthusiasts have lost a great champion and defender of our way of life.

Absolutely gutted to hear this. My Condolences to Paul's family and close friends.

I can't help thinking that Paul's early passing is an absolute disaster for future road safety. Who else is going to step forward and present logical argument against the government spin and oppression of motorists.

My word that's awful, I was just thinking earlier this week that I always have the intention of paying into the fund and always prioritise the money elsewhere - I feel kind of bad now.

RIP indeed, to a man who fought for what he believed in - a sensible and considered approach to Road Safety.
