I have just finished watching the evening news on tv, and switched on the PC.

Like others when I read this my jaw just dropped.

It's not just his age, but what he stood for and fought for valiantly though perceived as a lone figure by the establishment.

He was not.

Shock, just like when a respected leader passes on.

But in his case, no room for a mention on the evening news, despite his following and his personal courage and crusade.

Long may it continue with another at the helm.

What very sad news. I was listening to him on BBC Radio 2 just 2 or 3 weeks ago. Damn, we need someone to try a fill his shoes and keep the Safespeed campaign going. RIP Paul. I am gutted.

The motoring community has lost one of it's most accurate marksman, who consistently delivered disparaging, logical arrows into the spin and dogma that surrounds road safety policy these days.

I'm at a loss. Truly at a loss. Does this mean that the path to a road safety policy are now lined by troopers from BRAKE, T2000, and acolytes of G. Monbiot?

Dearie me. I hope not.

What is it they say? "Those that shine brightest, last for the shortest time".

Sad, sad day.

That is so sad. Paul was the voice of reason in the face of nonsense from the likes of Brake. He will be very difficult to replace.

Wow, what a shock. RIP. Denizens of PH, we must not let his passing be the beginning of the end; only the end of the beginning.

So very glad that his - our - fight will carry on. Please make sure that any help needed is broadcast through here, I will - and I'm sure many others will - ensure that the support will always be there.

He was a real hero, and a very unique man. He had an incredible abiltiy for straight talking, logical thought, and was able to think on his feet with a clear and level head.

His death will affect us all- even those who don't yet know it.

We all owe him a considerable debt.

Indeed.

His name, spirit and legacy will live on. He did speak sense on speed.

Said on the safespeed site already that the world has lost a very able gentle man

RIP Paul .. I will be lighting a candle for you on Sunday and I will raise a glass to your memory as a mark of respect for a kindred spirit.

My condolences to Claire and family and Paul's personal friends. A much liked and respected character. A real loss to a safety led motoring world and those of us remaining in the "common sense society"

This is the most shattering news I have heard recently.

What will happen with safespeed? I hope it continues.

There is no doubt that Paul single handedly took on the government TRL scum - and leaving us at such a young age was caused by the great machine of the state. Can the scum be left to pedal falsehoods like "speed kills" forevermore? The machinations of the state killed Paul Smith early as far as I am concerned.

David tried to fight Goliath - But Nu Labour Goliath was Billions of times the size of the biblical er and he had no chance with his health.

Just got back in after a run and every time I passed a camera I thought of Paul and what he has done for us!
Maybe the best way to deal with the cameras just now is to look at them as memorials to a man that did fight for us all! Doing so may also help us to slow down on approach and may just stop us getting a fine etc! Once by them we can gear it down and carry on!
And so the mans work will carry on!
RIP Paul.

Claire has said she plans to continue his campaign, however even just having her support in allowing the name/copyright/goodwill of the campaign to continue will be welcomed I'm sure. SafeSpeed was Paul's full-time job and I don't think any single person could ever replace his knowledge and dedication to the many issues. I am hoping he made unpublished notes on his laptop that others might be able to work with his long-term ideas, because he clearly had many ideas that he didn't have the time to work with, or didn't think the time was right.

Unfortunately he never saw the grand "scrapping of the speed camera" but I am certain he personally made a HUGE impact to their deployment and management, and I think the recent "Road Safety Grant" has been the government's quiet get-out, a few councils are pulling funding from the SCP's and using the money for other initiatives, and I'm sure many others will follow. You just need to look at the "in the press" section of the forum for proof that he was the #1 man the papers went to for a comment, because he usually knew the story inside-out well before them and already had researched it and prepared a perfect response to fulfill their needs. In fact in many cases they picked up the story from one of his press releases.

I'm shocked and saddened by this news. frown

I hope this isn't the end of Safespeed and all the work Paul did.

Though all that can wait for the time being as his wife and family must be devastated, my thoughts go out to them, especially as it is so near Christmas.

RIP Paul.

I don't think the following statement has ever been more appropriate:

"He will be sorely missed."

Paul Smith was a bloody hero.
