What a shock!

Deepest condolences to Paul's family and friends.

I hope he knows and they should know to be proud...

Paul Smith made a difference... what a tribute.

And I hope his work continues to make that difference.

I know Paul would have been heartened by all the kind words said about him here, and I'm sure Claire will appreciate them as well at this hardest of times.

However, once the shock has died away and we are left with the sadness, I'll be back on here asking you all (on behalf of the SafeSpeed members) to do whatever you can in anyway to help keep the SafeSpeed campaign for REAL road safety alive and to ensure the battles Paul has fought (and often won) were not in vain and that the momentum he achieved is sustained. Please, when that happens, respond!

I will be backing and supporting you in this.

Perhaps all these comments should be condensed to form a fitting press tribute to the guy as a decent, common sensed person as well a very strong -minded campaigner. After all - he was quoted in the press often enough - so perhaps there should be a short piece to mark his achievements in life.

It will be interesting to read his obituary in the press, if indeed he gets one in any of the main Nationals. I reckon it will be a fair barometer of journalistic integrity versus spin in what might get written, I can't see many of them going off the 'Speed Kills' message, even in Pauls obituary. I hate to think that there are those who will be relieved at his passing, but I suspect there are, and that the press will pander to them.

Lets see an end to the cameras and a return to decent policing. I want to contribute. Give us a link please.

This thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... has me so frustrated that I would like to ensure that Paul's legacy continues. If anyone is involved in SafeSpeed, please PM me.

RIP Paul.

Jesus, life can be so cruel and unfair, he could have continued to do so much good speaking up for real road safety, but sadly no more.

What a massive loss.

Of all the things I expected to read on the home page of PH, this was one of the last.

I never met Paul Smith, but he's had a great effect on how I view the road, and how I drive my car - one of my most favourite of chores. Since he's infleunced my life, and so many others, his memory will shirley live on and hopefully educate more and more people, and effect their lives and their attitudes. I feel greatly saddened by his loss, he was not without his shortcomings I'm sure, but he will always be remembered for his accomplishments and his legacy, SafeSpeed.

Paul, you will be missed. The world is a lesser place now that you aren't here.

Paul Smith, What a man! Paul gave up his full time job to push his campaign, he single-handedly took on a government (mafia) and could see through the spin, the lies and the deceit, he took everything that was thrown at him, shrugged it off and continued because, he knew that what he was fighting for was right.

Before I joined SafeSpeed I had never been part of any forum or activity on the internet, I was like a kid starting school again. I believed in Paul and what he stood for and, I was proud to have been part of his campaign.

Through Paul and, with the help of the SafeSpeed team I was inspired to start writing to my local paper and question my local council and police who turn out the same spin, the same lies and the same deceit that, most of the people of this country fall for. Paul could see through all that.

Like many great men before him, who where also called cranks, their work only gets the recognition it deserves after they’ve gone.

Clair! my beauty, you have done Paul proud by the way you have stood by him, you can hold your head up well above the clouds for what your partner in life has done for the people of this country, from a small place up in Scotland Paul sent shockwaves down the length of Britain that where felt at the very heart of London. His work changed this Governments way of thinking but, they where to proud to admit it. I hope Paul’s work doesn’t end up in vane; you will receive what ever support I can give should you need it in the future. RIP Paul and my fullest condolences to Claire, her family and friends.

I’ll also still stand by my statement I made on SafeSpeed:-

It all works like a mafia and the government are in on it, it’s a feeding frenzy of greedy people who are only interested in themselves.
