'My' Megane arrived on Friday afternoon with 76 miles on the clock.
A little review:
First impressions were its a funny looking thing, good solid feel to the interior and well weighted controls.
After a trip to N Wales today, I can say that the engine (don't even know what size it is but I'm guessing at a 1.6 petrol) is gutless and unrefined over 3k, its also geared very low, pulling 3.7k rpm at gps indicated 80mph in 6th gear.
Its also woefully uneconomical, combined 33.3mpg, that's 300 miles motorway and 20 miles town, driving miss daisy.
I was hoping to get a diesel one but beggars can't be choosers.
The handling felt fine for normal driving, the steering feel wasn't as good as a focus, or my 306 even, decent ride on the motorway .
I liked the dash design and display, the cruise control and speed limiter were useful things to have, as are auto wipers and lights, but all not really necessary (I guess that's progress)
The seats were comfy enough not to aggravate my bad back and the seats were fine in the back for the kids, also the cabin ambiance was quite nice with the twin sunroof's giving it a light, airy feel.
All in all 7 out of 10, pleasantly surprised, it feels of much higher quality than the previous version I have driven, only a few cheap touches let it down.
Would I buy one? No, but then I would never spend 14k on a Megane,

My local dealer isn'tdoing the 24hr drives and i felt too guilty about time wasting to go for a normal test drive....to be fair though i did only sign up to it last night so may be as they got back this quickly maybe i should have given them something to do.Edited by mcdjl on Wednesday 21st January 18:07
I had a Megane for the last weekend, posted about it on HJ's site as I couldn't find this thread.
Its not a bad car, of its type. I wasnt overly impressed with the quality compared to Renaults claims of how well the new Megane is built, on "my" car the headlamp aim had to be set to 4 for it to low enough to drive, on 1 it was sky high. The gaiter for handbrake and gearstick made noises and the glovebox didnt close cleanly. I dont know what mpg "mine" did but it was a 1.6VVT petrol. I thought the ride was quite good - it was on 16s iirc, it was the mid range model. Stupid things annoyed me with it, like the fact it defaulted to aircon on everytime you start it, that the LCD speedo was so very very bright, that gearchange light did my nut! Did anyone notice if their Megane had the lane change indicators?
I had a message from Renault UK who, having seen my moans, wanted to track the car down and get it looked at. Oops.

I'd forgotten about mine as I heard nothing after the initial application. Except yesterday I got a call saying the car would be with me in a few hours and a 1.6 5 door duly turned up.
To be honest, it's just another dull car. Steering has no feel, brakes are over assisted (why is every modern car like this?) and it really isn't fun to drive. It's certainly not a looker either, just blobby and anonymous, especially in the dreadful champagne colour I was given. Interior seems fairly nice, but the handbrake was very stiff and the glovebox hard to shut. Performance was actually ok but I'm not sure why it needs 6 speeds.
Oh and one final thing; for a car that will be sold as being safe, the visibility is appalling. The rear window is far too small and the massive mirrors and low a-pillars create big blindspots. Give me a Focus any day

i had a diesel. Not sure which one, it said eco2 on the back but that was it. wasn't particularly powerful, took me a while to find the trac control off button but even in the wet it didn't spin the wheels much, maybe a well sorted chassis? seemed to handle ok, averaged 45mpg which isn't great on mixed driving. The speed limiter function is very handy round town.
