Why do some people hate Porsche??
Discussion
Inspired by the 'why do people hate BMW??' thread.
I am abit confused as to why some people really hate Porsches?
These people who are apparently petrolheads, and put the pleasure of driving before anything else, but hate Porsches, which are arguably the nicest cars to drive in the world.
Bit puzzling really?

Dont think its actually the cars themselves they hate, far more likely to be the type of person who invariably drives them. Impreza Turbo's are an excellent example. Love the cars & what they offer, but drivers (particularly round my neck of the woods) are in the main complete cock trumpets of the highest order.
I guess it must be a grudge thing, or listening to Jeremy Clarkson too much. I've heard they're mostly brilliant cars. Im a Porsche lover myself, and one day aspire to a 997 Carrera S or even better a 1972 Porsche 911S
It could have something to do with jealousy of course, or that age old fact that the engine is in the 'wrong' place.

The problem is that sufficient numbers of non-petrolhead "look at me I drive a marque" types buy them and so dilute the perception.
Some would say that the proportion of enthusiasts driving Porsches is actually very small.
I think the same issue plagues many/most of the popular driving marques.

I think that pretty much sums up a lot of peoples perceptions about Porsche and their owners.
I didnt dislike Porsche owners, but couldnt understand the appeal the cars themselves when I was younger, but now Im mature enough to see the value and appeal of such a vehicle and not for the Badge or the status symbol, but for the looks, the engineering, the performance and the sound....but Im attacted to older models barring the CGT
I like driving the Prosches I have driven (997 Turbo and GT3) but don't want one because:
1. too many about
2. smack of midlife fatness - in my town most forty somethings with money and no real interest in cars buy a Porsche so they can say they have one (they play golf also)
3. In my view they are a bit too good - built by smarty pants engineers in white coats - I personally prefer something with "character" - designed by artists and built by enthusiasts. Sure it'll have some annoying things wrong with it, but you fall in love with fallability in my view not competence.
Hopefully no pychologists out there!

i wouldnt say im not a porsche fan as i like the CGT and have a real soft spot for the caymen but i cannot stand the 911
i have huge respect for it as im sure they are excellent cars but i hate the stupidly large range, im not a big fan of the styling and i just seem them too often to care. nothing to do with the people who drive them.
i think a small dislike can snowball, if you initially have a small dislike for something but you then see them everywhere and get told how brilliant they are constantly your dislike can become more and more intense until you just can stand them at all
anyway for what ever reason a 911 would never ever enter into any dream senario!
sorry to all you do own and love them im am with out doubt that they are good cars just not for me

It is weird and true that they are hated.
I had the following cars in this order, and obviously drove them pretty much the same:
SC'd MX5 - no particular feedback from others
TVR Griffith - everyone loves it
Porsche 944 Turbo - everyone hates it
BMW E36 328 - no particular feedback
I've based this purely on comments made by others and how I was treated on the road by other motorists, to go from the reaction of the TVR to the 944 (which cost less than half the price) was a surprise.

I agree with most of this. My mate's Cayman S was excellent but did nothing for me. I don't hate it, just don't want one. I appreciate they are excellent cars but they need more than that to appeal to me. Similarly to BMW for me.1. too many about

jealousy, ignorance, lack of knowledge.... but mostly "because its cool to hate...."
the defence is quite short though: brands hatch, 1970, pedro rodriguez, the stuff of legends
the thing is if you sat a '73 carrera rs, maybe a 550 spyder in front of anyone, they would say "thats a cool car". problem probably started in the 80s with the loadsamoney crowd buying 911 turbos and the legacy lives on. the latter day cars just seem to have that stigma attached to them, not that the owners care at all and isnt that ironic!
i love them, they have a wonderful history from the very early days, a fantastic racing pedigree and they still have the engine in the wrong place!!!
i mean how can you not love this

Same with BMWs, that. Brilliant cars. Not their fault their best seller is the 318i Coupe driven by phone wielding road warriors who don't give a shit. Met many a lovely BMW owner who didn't meet those criteria...Well i am in the i cant stand porsche camp. My reasons well they are varied. Firstly these days even here people ask what sportscar should i get everyone jumps up and goes porsche(boxster,911,cayman blah blah) which to me shows a distinct lack of individuality and imagination which brings me to the next point porsche lack of imagination.
Bear with me here. I think old porsches are fantastic original80s through to early 90s 993 area visually and technically but thereafter porsche seemed to run out of ideas so keep changing the headlights etc but nothing special otherwise.
And last but not least people keep going on about how porsches are the greatest sports cars ever. How so? Define a sports car?
Sure just my viewpoint. No i havent driven a porsche but have been tempted many times to get a classic one the new ones simply dont do anything for me.
