Why do people turn MR2s into fak Ferraris?

There was a story on a Kit Car site about a guy with a grey import MR2 turbo, insurance cost a bomb, more so when he had the engine modded, we're talking multiple thousand / year. Then he fitted a Ferarri body kit & nervously call his insurer with the latest mods, only to be told the premium had gone DOWN to £400 ish as it was now classed as a kit car, not a grey import.

Reason enough for me - personally I wouldn't put the badges on though.
I'd probably would avoid red also.

have heard this before. and as you say it might just about be worth it. i guess if you left it white or gunmetal or black it could be an okay compromise. what i am not clear on is how much of the bodykit you need to stick on for it to become a 'replica'. i mean could you just do the wings or something? i am serious about this - it's a real loophole, i have thought many times about how you could insure one of these cars very affordably this way. there's another common kit people fit to merdes - usually cabriolets - it's not supposed to look like anything so it's not a rep - but unbelievably it too counts as making it a 'kit car'. if you sva'd a dimma kitted peugeot (god forbid) could that count as a kit car???

Didn't this guy and his replica feature on Top Gear (or Fifth Gear, or Used Car Roadshow)?...

I actually like that. remove the badges and it would be a really nice car.

Also very practical as it has 4 seats and a low maintenance engine.

I wouldnt pay much over normal 406 coupe money though..

At least they're journalists or monkeys who know better than to use the word "fecking." wink

I can only hope they do the same in other countries. I would have loved to have bought a 355, but wouldn't touch them because of all the wank stains driving about in fake ones.

The fake ones would never put me off buying a real 355. Service bills maybe, but not fakes biggrin.

There is a fake 355 just near me and i do laugh every time i see it,
but it probably cost £15000 to convert but for that price you could have a real Ferrari a mondal or 308gt4 are around for that price,
ok it will cost a lot more to run but its real.
one person on the north east spotted forum spied one in Newcastle just as a bunch of chavs shouted it's a f**king MR2 To the driver.

It has to be the insurance saving over a real Fezzer. I mean what other possible reason could you see to drive an MR2 in drag?

yes

At the same time they could make owning a supra with a load of plastic tat glued on it a criminal offence, as it doesn't meet with taste approval schemes. Or Caterhams as they aren't the originals. Or Ranger Rovers because they are lets face it large pointless vehicles that are virtually never used for their intended purpose.

Someone out there did a 348 rep, there used to be two floating around up here, one looked fairly convincing, from a distance, the other wouldn't pass for a ferrari unless you removed your eyes.
and ears, no doubt

I remember when I stayed in Italy I knew a chappy with a 911 engine in a Bug convertible.

I wonder if that would be considered a fake?

Similar feelings towards the fake Dodge Vipers you see occassionally.....having said that the Ferrari 365 Daytona Spider used in Miami Vice was actually a rebodied Corvette paperbag
yes the McBurnie.

Ferrari have always cracked down hard on replica builders unless they use genuine Ferrari parts (there are some companies out there who make '50s race-replicas out of scrapped Ferrari 400s and Fiat Dinos that have authorisation), but otherwise Ferrari get peeved. Funnily enough, Porsche and Jaguar don't mind (possibly due to availability of 'genuine' parts to make them out of), and the Lamborghini family have even endorsed some replicas of the older models from Parallel Designs.

McBurnie got away with it because they altered the Daytona design sufficiently to constitute an 'original' (no Daytona Spider had a plexiglass front end, it has square headlights and if you look closely at the interior it's all Corvette with wood veneer (neither the Corvette nor the Daytona had wood veneer).

I've not had the pleasure of driving an original - yet. When I do you will read my comparison on here, first! smile
Having also never driven an original, I can think of one big difference. I have left my Corse in the local Asda car park and happily gone shopping. Really don't think I could do that with a rare original Stratos.
