I've just been looking at 500Es to replace the Monaro with smile Or maybe a 2000-model HSV GTS.

Usually these kind of changes only apply to cars registered on or after the date the new scheme is introduced.

Are they saying that these changes will be retrospective?
Yes they are ....
Just seen that a friend of mine in a 120 bhp 1.9 TDI Saab 93 was paying £140 will now be paying £260!!!!
Jesus. That's really censoreded up.

So existing cars will be caught which has no effect on buying decision (as they already exist).
Nice little earner there.
So, if they are really serious about reducing C02 output (like the govt care, really!) the only option to owners of such cars is to scrap them and buy something else. That's good for the environment then...

Oh, and the VED scheme is PLG for cars registered before 01 March 2001 and the new thief-tax bands for cars registered after 10 March 2001. What about cars registered on 01 March 2001?

That's what's annoying me slightly at the moment.
Picked up my 3.0V6 GTV at the end of Feb 2001 and then resisted temptation to get it registered ASAP and waited until 1st March to (a) save on a Month's tax and (b) sneak into 'Y' reg numbers (for better re-sale over 'X' - originally intended to sell on after a year)

That "saving" has cost me only a little in the last couple of years (due to being in band F rather than G purely due to date) but is about to rape my wallet. And will it save the environment? 'Course not; I'll just have to bend over and take it.

As a disabled person I get exemption from VED. I may go out and buy a car in the top band for tax just to increase the potential irony......

been looking at changing the wifes Disco (rusting away as we speak) which is currently £180 per year for an equivalent 4x4, tdi and the killer point is probably going to be how much the road tax is going to be...what amazes me is that Audi A8 4.2 Quattro is only £205 RFL!! (at the moment)
Edit oops just checked its 322g/km and £180 Bargain!!! now, how to convince the wife she needs a 4.2l v8???

I'm not convinced any of the other clowns would be any better though TBH.

All the bloody same IMO.

Just looking at all the hot hatches currently and the Clio Rensport & Megane Rensport are £260p.a. while all the others are min £300.

Anyone running an Auto is going to get humped!!! Loo at the Saabs a 95 HOT 250bhp Manual is £300 yet the Auto is £415.

What really does shine are the BMW TD's well the newest ones at least.

The old arguement you dont buy a car based upon its Road Tax level are now totally null and void - I can assure you that these costs will only go in one direction too either by increasing the efficiency of the banding all retro spective to 2001!!! or just upping the tax at each level.

Basically anyone now living in London running a 4x4 is going to get stung £6.5k & now a nice £440 a year.

Final point the 2009/10 moving to 2010/11 only the Band A & B dont change everything else increases however if your Band C your increase is a nice 16% £30 to £35 however if your band M thats a mere 3.4%... that really a green policy!!

What's the fine for not taxing your car?

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) carries out a computer check each month, as well as roadside checks to identify those vehicles without a valid tax disc. You could face an automatic penalty of £80 as well as a minimum fine of £1000. Your vehicle could be clamped, impounded or even crushed.

Not seen them yet but last year mine was £185 up from £170 so I'd assume hes pushed it up to a nice £200.
