I guess it comes down to how efficient the regeneration system is, and how big the engine is to keep the capacitors topped up. The puny engine needs merely to cover the difference between the energy recovered from braking and that required to acceleration.
The devil is in the detail, but I can't see a car specced to handle commuting being any fun on a B-road.

somewhere north of 600Nm of torque and this will be sustained to get you back up to the speed you were doing before you hit the brakes.
At 0 rpm. Electric motors produce maximum torque at stall and a (usually) linear decrease with rpm. Electric motors really make quoting torque figures irrelevant, power is what you care about.

How id love to be able to stop every single person in the UK from buying road tax for there cars for the next 12 months as a protest.

Good luck police, try and prosecute millions of drivers. Prisons are full, courts are stuffed full too. They would fail in a satisfying way hehe

Meltdown and fk all they could do about it!

Where do we get it started??

They will not back down - if they did the whole huge asset loss in cars would have been totally pointless.

I would 100% assume that in the future yearly (like always) the new VED bands will increase in £ terms, but also decrease in CO2 terms too so forcing the motor industry to get greener.

Look at how many sub 120g/jm cars you can buy now vs a year ago & how many are going to be <99g/km...

tenner says they will

gordon brown scrapped the computer initiative 9 months after thousands of people where employed by computer companies just to run the initiative for them, one morning woke up, stopped it, hundreds of thousands wasted setting up the scheme, non of it government money all private company money, not to mention thousands of people sacked.

Apologies if this has been asked before.

My road tax is due for renewal at the end of this month at £210 (287g).

Having renewed, I plan to surrender the tax on 31st January, and reapply on February 1 2009 before the new £440 rate comes into effect on March 1, 2009.

Does that work?

Even if you SORN the car for a month or two?

Actually it does but you've got to SORN the car as part of the process which means you cant drive it for a bit.

I don't use this car in winter anyway. So my plan would be SORN it at the end of December and reapply on February 1st.

Yes it does work - I'll be SORN-ing 2 cars in February, and applying for tax commencing 1st March. The money difference is tiny, but if we all did it, the DVLA might collapse hehe

I really need to know how to time this properly - when do you buy the new tax disc to ensure it all works? 28th Feb? Then it'll be valid from 1st March but for 1 year under the current rate?

How far in advance should I SORN my car?

Guy at work applied for his Oct tax disc on 11 September so thats 3 weeks ish.

I have SORN cars before but can't remember how long it takes. You would only need to SORN it for a day in theory before you re-apply for a new tax disc.

Timing is not about starting the 'new' tax, but in getting your money back on the 'old'/current.

Unless they've changed the rules, you have to change the car to SORN by post, and include the 'old'/current tax disc. It must arrive before the end of the month to ensure that you get a refund of the following month onwards.

I'm going to be SORNing in Feb, so the plan is to post off the tax discs and SORN letter around Feb 24th to ensure I get a refund for March onwards. It is unfortunate that this is in the middle of the week, but I don't need to use those cars.

It depends on how long you can do without your car - you might prefer to SORN at the end of Jan as it falls over a weekend.

It's annoying in the extreme that even though I've paid for (say) the entire month of February, if I send in my tax disc to ensure a refund of March onwards, my car is untaxed during those last few days of February! It would be amusing if it were to go to court as clearly I have paid that tax hehe

You have to display the disc too.

I was threatened with court after my car was spotted without a valid disc (but was taxed).

I was being taken to court for £0.00

I offered to pay this without going to court and was told no I'd have to appear.

FFS !

Had to get my sister (a solicitor) to get them to drop it in the end... bunch of complete morons.

yes - I should have stated above that obviously the car must not even be parked on the public highway after the disc has been sent to the DVLA.
