Arghhhhhh!
i just heard an American TV advert on CNBC, opening line "We all know it's good to be green and hybrid". WTF does that mean? It was selling hot tubs that consume less energy. Apparently.
Since when have adverts ever told the truth?i just heard an American TV advert on CNBC, opening line "We all know it's good to be green and hybrid". WTF does that mean? It was selling hot tubs that consume less energy. Apparently.
To me, I dont really see the point in terms of MPG, but rather what you pay at the pump, and in running costs.
If I wanted a road burner, I'd buy one, but to me, the point of these kinds of cars is more about cheap running, cheap tax, cheap everything.
And at the moment, the price paid at the bowser seems pretty much line ball, but you might save a bit more money in tax with the Prius. I think its a pretty much line ball argument, or, if you enjoy driving, it probably falls to the diesel at the moment.
BUT, what happens when Toyota bring out a diesel engined Prius? It will be game, set, and match. Thanks you linesmen, thank you ballboys.

bmw, vw are working on the same tech and as I said above that should be the natural stepping stoneIf I wanted a road burner, I'd buy one, but to me, the point of these kinds of cars is more about cheap running, cheap tax, cheap everything.

I think if this comparison was against the new 118d (with the efficent dynamics gubbins) the prius would look a joke a very unfunny one at that.
ETA, not even sure if this is the BMW with the new technologies but I'd say this spanks a prius at petty much every level.
118d M Sport
£21,995
CO2 (g/km): 119
Combined fuel consumption (mpg): 62.8
Power Output (hp) 143
0-62mph (secs)8.9

On thwe older 1 series the model of choice was the 120d over the 118d however with the updates the gap has really decreased and now Id say the 118d makes more sense £60VED cheaper per year £1600 cheaper list and only 34bhp down.
Of course the 123d is the Halo model so for me the new 1er would be either the 118d or the 123d
i had a Prius as a hire car. Had to it was designated and work etc...
I was joyfull at having achieved a combined cycle of 18mpg! (Sorry world) Hated every last second of it of its flat to the floor four hour run. And I have to admit failed to even get it move when I first turned it on. (you dont start them) and had to go and ask the lady at the desk how to make it actually come to life!

lol, aye, it took me ages to figure out that even when it's switched on, it's not actually switched on. But I did enjoy driving it, especially below 30mph when you could make it fully electric and sneak up on dawdling pedestrians.I was joyfull at having achieved a combined cycle of 18mpg! if you want good mpg follow a VW T2 camper
If you want disappointing mpg, drive a VW T2 camper! Drove mine gently for 4000km last summer (Spain and back) and managed <30mpg at speeds NEVER exceeding 55mph!Still, despite effectively chucking out 220+g/km CO2, the car tax is free...
Its interesting to see that BMW are introducing a hybrid drive sytem for the X6 and X5 "gas guzzlers". They have released data for the X5 that uses the twin turbo 2 lt deisel that delivers 204bhp with 400nm of torque , in the 8sp box there is an electric motor providing an extra 20 bhp with 210nm of torque. The fuel consupmtion and emmissions are 43.5mpg on the combined cycle and just 172g/km of CO2 emissions.Other features include the use of a solar panel to supplement battery charging and it can also be used to heat the fuel thus improving cold start emmisions.
I wonder what the Eco Facists will make of that?
