Could be the vehicle speed sensor making the revs 'hang up' if when you stop, they die down again.

Had this problem on quite a few early Focus'

It's located on the top side of the gearbox casing, in line with the driveshafts when looking from above - If you remove the air filter assembly you can unplug it for a short drive to see if the problem is solved.

Of course the previous poster's idle speed control valve and TPS suggestions could be worth looking at too. Also check the rubber pipes on the back of the inlet manifold for splits, should be able to hear an air leak ( hissing at idle ) if so.

Cleaning the TPS didn't work (looked new already)Looks like i've found the IACV but it seems virtually impossible to get to so it looks like it may have to go to a garage after all!!

get the ratchet in an have a stab biggrin where abouts is it?
Underneath the throttle body, inside the inlet manifold, can get to the top bolt with the throttle body removed, but need to be underneath to get to the bottom bolt.

Kippax,

I always use Classic Cats which is opposite Toys R Us on Gemini in Warrington, he is a Jag specialist but he has always sorted out my cars, including a 1999 1.8 Focus, heis a top bloke and very reasonably priced.

We have just got my wife a Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec & when you are changing gear it sounds like you are still holding the accelerator down when your not?.
The problem seems to be that it takes some time for the revs to fall when you take your foot off the accelerator. Anyone have any idea of what could cause this ? (Pedal isn't sticking on mats or anything obvious) It is a w reg 2000 model with high miles (94k)but doesn't seem like a clutch issue to me?
Any advise on possible cause greatly appreciated.
The problem is that blue oval badge on the grille.

A couple of lads at work have had this problem with their Foci; there was a problem with a piece of the wiring loom between the throttle pedal and the main loom. V reg and 51reg respectively.

Ignore me if it has a cable.

Hi there
just bought a 1.8 zetec focus yesterday and had the same problem with engine revving when moving on no throttle, then going to idle when car stopped. Also the idle was really rough and ocassionally cutting out. Basically that's why i.m here. Following the suggestions here i checked the IACV, which looks brand new and the TPS. Still no better. Finally found the fault was a split in the rubber hose which fits onto the inlet manifold just after the throttle body. Taped it up and away we go!! Just off to buy new hose now. Hope this helps. p.s managed to get bottom bolt out of IACV by running offside wheels onto our pavement and removing it from underneath, bit tricky but cheaper than the garage option!!
All the best FiL
