insurance was only three times what i paid for the car!
still, paid for all by myself. certainly looked after it better knowing how hard i had to work to pay for it! had the funniest dangerous fault where whenever i pressed the brake pedal the headlights would come on. wondered for months why people kept pulling out in front of me at junctions............
roflrofl

My story has been sent in so you'll all have to wait for the story of Suzy the Suzuki SC100 'Whiz Kid' until I'm guessing they get published?

My first motor was a K reg Mk1 Escort RS1600 but unfortunately with a 2 ltr pinto (rally tuned though) The previous owner to me was in debt to a guy who did rallying so they swapped the BDA engine out and put the pinto in, be worth a freakin fortune nowadays as well, ah fun days they were..........................

I'm surprised that I haven't seen a Mk 1 or Mk 2 Capri updated with a Duratec V6. I think it'd be a nice swap. When I was a kid and lived in Europe, I loved the looks of the Mk 1 Capri. I especially thought that the curve of the rear window was rather lovely and unique. The Mk 2 looked nice, too, but to my eyes never quite captured the looks of the special rear side window of the Mk 1.

My first was one of these:

A 1600GL in blue (with a slightly different coloured driver's door). Cost me £750 back in 1986. Made the mistake of buying a Haynes manual and "tinkering" with it. Turned the idle up so high, you could put it in second and drive around with no feet on the pedals.

First week I got it, I drove into town on Saturday (as usual), parked in the multi-story, looked round the shops (as usual), then got the bus home (as usual). It was only when Mum said I could put it in the garage as Dad was on nights that I realised I'd left it in town. D'oh.

Absolutely bullet-proof car though; regularly got me from Edinburgh to Watford and back without a hiccup. Once froze solid (I'd never heard of anti-freeze), but thawed out and was right as rain. Eventually, the engine seized up in about '92.

I remember the rear seats being very comfy, too...wink

In 1998 I had 1987 Pug 205 1.0, 4 gears, flat out at 80, sycro betweem 1st and 2nd was no existant.

rolled a lot, super skinny tyres, poor brakes inspite of new pads, discs and fluid, you had to get in from the passenger door as the drivers side was jammed, exhaust fell off one saturday on the way to work (must have woke up most of the town)

The sony CD player in it was worth more than the car.

was a fun car.

then bought a Clio 1.8RSi, it blew my mindsmile

M-reg Fiesta 1.3, 1 lady owner and spent most of its previous life on the shopping run. Then I brought ithehe There is a picture somewhere of me heading to Pistonfest down the M69 nudging 121mph after about 5 miles of gravity to help whilst trying to keep up with the 360, 911 etc etc. Taught me the laws of conservation of momentum and understeer.

Then I got the 205 1.9 GTicloud9

'89 mk3 Fiesta 1.1 Ghia, 5 door in red, that my mum gave me.

Put some lovely Fiesta RS1800 charcoal Recaro's in it, but otherwise it was standard.

Some GREAT memories.

My first car was an immaculate Opel Manta Berlinetta 2.0 (OJN 576T?), bought in 1990 for the princely sum of £1,995.

It was a 1978 model with Rostyle steel wheels, red bodywork, a black vinyl roof and manual sliding sunroof. I was the second owner and I recall the car had been Ziebarted from new, hence, there was no rust. The red velour inerior was like new and there was a nice three spoke, leather rimmed steering wheel. The radio/cassette was a Blaupunkt model, while the instrumentation sported a rev counter and ancillary gauges.

I hope the new owner replaced the Pirelli tyres which were legal, but old with cracking sidewalls.

The insurance policy with Highway cost me £250 (TPF&T), although, an 18 year old would not be able to insure such a car today.

I never ventured far, the longest journey being to South Wales. The car was kept for one year before being replaced with a 1964 LWB Land-Rover.

If anyone knows the car I'd love to hear from them. They are a rare car these days.

i had one of these in black http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEAT_Marbella

cost £400, drove @ 17 (now 8 years ago!), i loved it tho, first set of wheels and freedom !!

"The engine is an in-line 4-cylinder with 40 hp (30 kW) and 903 cc. This proved adequate for this light car which weighed in at about 700 kg"

Oh dear 40hp haha

How many Capri owners!

Mine was a 1600 engined 1.3L in yellow.
Then moved on to a 2.0l Ascona (RWD)

New kids are so unlucky.

My first car was a Marina, and the car I learned to drive in was a Marina estate.

This is why us old folk are such good drivers as we learnt to drive in some truly ste vehicles.
